Before/between (after the TrailTech Vapor install):

The left plastic was scraped up pretty bad- I don't have any good shots of it on the bike, though.

Next up is a good cleaning, dying the blue trim on the seats black, removing the windscreen and putting decals on the tank/tail (not factory- you'll see :D)

Um yeah, that windscreen sucks. The other thing you should do is get a better fender eliminator kit -- they sell some on ebay called "targa" which are pretty cheap and look really really nice (and still legal, at least in WA -- but you'd know more about that where you live).

Also, you tires look thrashed, and in addition, they look like the stock tires -- time for some new ones. I was more than happy with my pilot powers when I had my sv650.

It was a $500 bike, dude...work in progress. :P When I got it, the engine was locked up and it had been laid down fairly hard.

I'll have to look into Pilot Powers - not sure what I can get locally.

Looks good

Also, the barn-thing is cool

Not a Ducati? Psh.

Just kidding (kind of). Looks good, dude. Though I'm not a huge fan of that thick silver frame showing, cover that shiz up.

That's basically the SV's trademark. :P

I'm confused about the seat, looks like you got it to match the paint, then you painted it something different?

Anyway, good progress. Not bad at all.

Yeah, I found the seat on eBay and it happened to match my existing paint. When I had the bike repainted, my friend (the body shop guy) had that awesome brown metallic paint already, so we used that. We're going to dye the seat trim either black or silver.

Oh.. you did that brown paint on purpose?
2010-03-08, 9:59 AM #10
I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that the ugly brown poop paint looks good in person.

Lose the ugly windscreen. Replace the ugly rear fender with one of those awesome Jardine kits.

Get new tires. While the tires are off, take the rims to get powder coated black.

Fix your exhaust pipe - it's looking rusty.

DON'T RIDE IN THE SNOW. Unless you want to get a blow dryer and dry it off for 40 minutes afterward.

You might consider stripping the bike to the frame and getting the frame powder coated. If you don't want the color changed, at least clean it down really good. Your swing arm is looking pretty filthy/rusty.

The exhaust is fine. The wheels are gunmetal..I'm going to keep that color. The bike has not been thoroughly cleaned since I bought it - main focus has been to get it running and fix the major issues.

The pipe looks rusty to me. Perhaps it's just the picture?

Also. that was pretty good work on fixing the dent in the tank. Bondo?

New-used tank with much less significant damage. The flash made things look a lot worse than they do - the pipes are discolored from heat, but there's no rust that I've found.

I've never really liked the look of single exhaust. It also makes me think the bike is going to tip over.

You should get that badass Ixil Dual Under-seat exhaust. It would be s :awesome:
2010-03-08, 10:57 AM #15
Looks good. Not a big fan of the color choice though.

2010-03-08, 11:04 AM #16
Pipe looks fine to me. Not sure if they are stainless (I think mine were) but stainless gets that brown color after a while. Also, as long as it's not rusted through, who cares?

I'm not a fan of the stock sv650 pipe but spending $$ on a new one with no real benefit other than looks is hard to justify. I got my pipe for free after I was rear-ended by another motorcyclist.m Rims/frame look fine. You need to clean and lube your chain, it definitely is rusty!

Nice thing about the sv650 is that parts are relatively cheap and are really easy to find.

Here's my old one with an aftermarket pipe:

I really want to ride my bike, but it's been cold and rainy for the last month. What's up with that, California? COLD AND RAINY?

I pulled the windscreen and tucked some wires. Next up is wire loom for what's still exposed..and a good cleaning. I have to do something about the mirrors, too - these are terrible.

Pardon the cell phone pic - was too busy riding today to get the real camera. :D

Get one of those Givi windscreens, they're B.A.

And bar end mirrors on that thing would be shmexy.

Otherwise, looking good! The color does look a bit better in the sunlight. Take a proper picture!
2010-03-09, 10:04 PM #22
Bleck, forget windscreens, they make sv650 look soooo lame (esp. givi ones).

The weather is supposed to be good tomorrow, so maybe then. Yeah, I've been thinking about bar end mirrors...that's probably what I will get.

I really like how it looks without a windscreen. I think I'm going to keep it the way it is.

I don't know much about motorcycles but I must say that I'm impressed w/ your progress on this. I really like the look of it.

anyone complaining about riding a bike in the rain and cold, man up! :P

Lamer than that big bundle of wires and wirenuts hanging off the front of the bike?

Not a huge windscreen, just something small to cover up that crap over the headlight bracket, in front of the instrument panel. I call them "hats" because they look more like a hat than a windscreen.

Wire nuts...? There are no wire nuts or otherwise sub-par wiring components on my bike, thank you very much... :omg:

It looks like wirenuts, but they're probably just the connectors. Either way, put that **** away or cover it up.

My wife is getting her motorcycle license tomorrow (she took the Basic Rider Course and got her certificate, tomorrow the DMV will trade it for a license). I'm trying to find a small bike for her, probably a GS500 or SV650, but definitely something small and relatively inexpensive.

How did you come by this bike?

You might want something a little smaller than an SV650 for her - it's a torquey SOB. I stomped on it in first once and I think I took the front wheel off the ground.

I bought it from one of my uncle's co-workers - he locked up the motor (valve adjustment gone horribly wrong) and wanted to buy a different bike instead of fixing this one.

Uh, just about anything will wheelie, provided that doesn't weight a ton like a Harely or a Goldwing, but point taken.

I've sat on the SV650 (I found it was a bit small for my long legs), but have not been able to actually ride one. I have decided, though, that I will never own a Buell. Good lord those things are rough.

I'm not talking about dropping the clutch and trying to wheelie - just rolling hard on the throttle in first gear. The thing about the SV is that it's really torquey - you don't have to wind it out to get power, so for someone who isn't expecting it, it may come as a surprise.

A lot of people say the SV650 is a great first bike, but a lot of people also say it's too big and you'll be a better rider if you start on something smaller. I don't know..., this is my first one and I love it. However if your girlfriend is on the small side, maybe take a look at a Ninja 250, or a 500-something?

Or maybe she'll be perfectly fine with an SV..I dunno. :)

Yeh, my wife is only 5'3 and weighs 115. I was thinking about a Ninja 250 or a GS500, but those aren't too easy to find in my neighborhood. SV650s, on the other hand, are plentiful. The three main things I'm looking for are small size, plentiful parts, and low price.

Since she's new, chances are she'll burn out the clutch plates or drop it and break a mirror/lever/peg/whatever. I'd rather she didn't drop a $10,000 European bike with $120 brake levers, when she could drop a $1200 Nip bike with a $12 brake lever.

Honestly I think the SV will be a lot of bike for her. The plus side, though, is that it has enough torque that you really don't need to slip the clutch much at all...it's very easy to ride.

What's your local craigslist site?

There's not much she could on there right now - it's mostly just dirt bikes and quads (bleh) or helmets and boots. The few bikes that are listed are beastly.

I second ninja 250 -- way easier for a beginner to handle, and much, much easier for a small person to handle.
