1991 MR2 Turbo hardtop

It's a stripper model - crank windows, manual locks, manual steering. Hardtop turbo's are rare also - this is basically the lightest MR2 Turbo ever produced. All the interior stuff is there..it just has to be put back on.

It was practically given to me for the paltry sum of $1000. The engine has a bad rod bearing, so I will probably get a used shortblock ($200ish) and just swap it out.

So is one a parts car? or are you just going to have 2 now? (make one an autocross/race car)

I'm going to have two. Both are in far too good condition to destroy for parts. This one is actually in better shape than mine, as far as the body goes. My engine/drivetrain in that car would be phenomenal - I just don't want to do that.. :p

I agree, that body is in better shape you should do the swap

I'd be pulling 12 second quarter miles and would have incredible handling, but then I'd be sacrificing my poor car...which I don't want to do. I'll drive my car this summer and get this one fixed.

So, you're this one guy with a snowmobile, a truck, a motorcycle, and two cars?

Cops get paid too much.

I raced an MR2 not too long ago in my truck.

The MR2 lost. Bad.

But I've got nothing but top end, so it was a mistake on his part. He had to of known that once I got to the sweet spot that all that lovely torque would be a serious advantage.

Non-turbo, I take it? Or you have a beast of a truck?

I like the MR2. It's like a Japanese Fiero!

It was turbo'd, I could hear it every time he shifted. PSSSHHHEWWW

My truck has a 300 straight six bored out .060 over on each cylinder, a high lift/duration camshaft, and my crankshaft is stroked. My induction system features an Offenhauser intake manifold and a Holley 4 barrel carburetor. I have a Ford 9 inch rear differential I pulled out of a junkyard installed to.

I have NO low end power. Starting from a stop you have to ride the clutch almost all the way through first gear. The other thing that sucks is the 3.33 transmission AKA the three on tree. My top gear ratio is only 1:1, but the rear diff makes up for it a lot. My truck is also heavy, 79 Ford F-100.

If I take 2nd up to about 48 miles an hour, then shift into third and stomp it the back bowls open up and I start gaining speed really quickly.

Something about that older body style just gets me, every time I see one that has been well kept it just makes me want to go out and buy one for myself.

I'm looking at another car myself. A 1970 Ford Galaxie. It has a bad engine, but if the body isnt too rusted up, I'll probably get it and try to put the 400 Cleveland in from my '73 Ford LTD.

I honestly don't get the point of owning two cars, but then I'm not a huge car guy. As a matter of fact I'm trying to get rid of mind for a decent amount so I can spend my summer biking.

This thread makes me miss my CRX. I had swapped a nice setup into it, just never had the funds to finish it completely. *sigh* oh well. Someday my RSX will be my hobby car. Until someday when I get my IROC-Z with a LS1 swap.

One of the guys I work with has one - doesn't have a 400 Cleveland in it, though. :awesome:

...two?

Heh.

2000 Suzuki SV650 - nice weather toy
1991 MR2 Turbo t-top with power everything - summer daily driver, long-distance drives, drag strip every so often
1991 MR2 Turbo hardtop with no options - very lightweight, awesome track car...may turn into a race car
2005 Tundra 4x4 V8 - winter daily driver

I use so much less gas in the summer...it's great. :P

Why not just buy an entry-level BMW (I say entry level because combined, and including the time/money you spent on them, might add up to $36k)? Much classier then driving around Crusty McRusties.

Let's see.

Tundra - $16k
SV - $500 (with all work/etc, maybe $1500)
MR2 - $7000 (maybe $10k total)
MR2 #2 - $1000 (maybe $1800 by the time it's on the road - for a car that's worth what..$6k or so)

What would that get me, a money-pit used M3 that would likely cost more to insure than everything I have combined?

WTF are you talking about rusty cars? Did you see my bike? My truck? Hell my MR2 t-top is the worst shape of all of them:

Any BMW in my price range would be destroyed by my MR2 anyway - and I love MR2s. I dislike BMWs.

I second jlee. You can get much nicer classic muscle cars in great condition for the price of a BMW. I'd take a 69 camaro for 40k over a 50-60k M3 any day of the week.

Plus I also have the use of a truck...loading manure, tires, logs, or a snowmobile in the back of a BMW is not really the greatest idea.

This times a thousand.

Not to mention the fact that in 20 years the BMW will be a hunk of crap worth nothing and the muscle car will probably have doubled in value.

And BMW makes POS cars that are dressed up nice. Good buy JLee, I would love to have an MR2. I just can't make myself work in that little engine bay :)
