30 fps cap on Jedi Knight?
2010-03-12, 6:14 PM #1
Hey everyone. You might remember I did a speedrun of Jedi Knight. I think I want to redo it for several reasons, one of which is getting a better quality capture. I found that amazing 3D acceleration fix, which works (yay), but I seem to be at a constant 30FPS.

I've heard that some people are getting much better framerates with V-sync off, but I don't see an option to do so in game.

I've got an ATI Radeon 4870. Any tips?

Use fraps, JK doesn't have Vsync as far as I know.

I have never noticed a cap. On all my cards, which have been either 3dfx or nvidia, I sync to refresh rate and get 60 or 75 depending on my monitor. You can activate the advanced display mode by passing -displayconfig I think (it's in the FAQ on the main page).

(oops, not in FAQ I guess, it's in trails guide, though: http://www.jediknight.net/trail/guide.html)

There's a reason that video only has 4 stars.

Make sure your video drivers are not set to force Direct3D VSync on. Both nVidia and ATI control panels have this option.

I don't have Vsync forced in my settings. In fact I still get 30 fps with Vsync explicitly set to always off in the ATI settings. This happens whether I have Fraps running or not.

(edit) Tried the framerate command. It's telling me that I'm running at 60 fps solid but I can definitely tell it's actually around 30. Playing in software mode is much smoother.

If it's 60 solid are you sure the vsync isn't on? It should fluctuate if not...

Well maybe it's on somewhere. But I can't find out where. I didn't see any refresh rate related features in the Advanced Display Config section. And the problem still happened with "Vsync off no matter what" set in my ATI options.
