Computer problems...
2003-12-31, 7:21 PM #1
Just the other day I, for the most part built myself a new computer (replaced the Motherboard, Processor, RAM, Hard Drive, and the case, keeping only my old video card and DVD Burner)

However I am having a bit of a problem. My computer will just completely shut off at what seems to be random times. But just about every time it shuts off it seems to do it only when the computer is not really being used. If I'm on AIM talking with people it doesn't do it. If I stop for any extended period of time (so far it has not been any close periods of time) it will shut off. However earlier I was running Spybot: Search and Destroy and it shut off, so I don't think that the computer HAS to be "idling" for it to shut off.

When it shuts off it doesn't go through the whole shut down process or anything, it just turns off, as if you were to pull the power cable from the outlet. You have to wait a few seconds as well before turning it back on, or else it will just shut off before even reaching the POST.

Here are the parts I have currently...

Motherboard: Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 3000+
RAM: 256 MB DDR PC3200
Hard Drive: Maxtor 120 GB

Processor temp: 48.89°C (120°F) - 50°C (122°F)
Motherboard temp: 23.89°C (75°F)

Both of those temps are much cooler than my older machine ran (processor 141°F and around 80°F)

My friend and I are both completely stumped, and since it seems many of you here know a lot about computers I am hoping you might have an idea as to what my problem is, and hopefully how to fix it.

Thanks in advance.

My first guess would be power supply.

Second guess would be bad RAM.

please translate the farenheight for all the developed countries apart from the U.S(the U.S is the only developed country to still use farenheight for land temperatures)

It's not hard to convert or find a converter...

But it's 48.89-50 and 23.89

Yeah, I'd imagine your power supply is too weak.

I assume you're using the one from your old PC since you didn't mention getting a new one?

What's the wattage on it?

Oh, sorry I forgot about that. I got a new power supply with my case... 350W. I have a 400W I'm going to switch in tomorrow.
