Why am I so bad at 4x games?

Seriously, I always get owned in the most insane ways.
MOO2- I can barely grab a single system while an AI goes and kills everyone, and then me, on easy.
Gal Civ 1 and 2- Same, they just ****ing steal systems before I can even make colony ships.

Civ4 I'm actually pretty good at, but Space 4x is killing me.
Any suggestions?

I too suck at 4x games. I just don't have the patience for that many little details.

Except that GalCiv on easy is REALLY ****ING EASY.

It's probably because he just wants to build ships without establishing his economy and tech base first.

I fail way before that, I send out scouts to look for a new colony, and as soon as I find something the AI colonizes it before I have even a single colony ship.
