I think Day light savings in spring time has always been an interruption in many peoples daily schedules and sleep cycles. I find it unnecessary in todays society, and we live in a 24-hour business world anyway. If I relocate again Im moving to Arizona where they still have standard time.

: No harsh debate please.

fall time travel day rocks

Last summer, when I was at sea we lost an hour every two days. It sucked ass.

However, flying out there I got paid for a days travel time that I never had. Skipped right from June 3rd to the 5th. :)

Yea, it's stupid.

If all my time keeping instruments didn't automatically change, I'd ignore it and stay on normal time.

LIES

For those of us who work nights during timewarp days, Spring FTW. :D
woot!

I like to think that it's a vast conspiracy to cover up that certain parts of the earth are actually temporally unstable, and warp ahead an hour every year.

It's done for the farmers n' ****. I don't see why, though.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I thought it was done for DAY LIGHT SAVINGS?
Not FARMING SAVINGS

I love it. LOVE IT.

Seriously, this week is my favorite week of the year. Who cares about losing an hour? I stay up late anyway, and it's on a Sunday, so psssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Last fall we had to come in an hour late to save overtime, but spring was work 9 / get paid for 10. We get no shift differential (compared to $1+/hr for the college security and up to 35% at the hospital), so I really hope they don't start complaining about an hour's pay each year.
woot!

I thought the original reason for the time changes had something to do with the railroad system, but has long since been without a proper reason.

You're going to have to explain what Richard Nixon has to do with DST.

As to all arguments that it is in any way beneficial : Want more light 'after the workday'? WORK EARLIER. The problem is not the time; the problem is modern society's insistence that we stick to some unnatural and arbitrary schedule instead of just living.

I think a big reason is to save power ...
2010-03-15, 3:24 PM #19
When I wake up for work now it is pitch black, so I have to turn more lights on.

How is that saving me power?

Except the experiment of moving DST to "save power" failed miserably.

I blame Nixon for everything I find distressing.

I always heard that the modern reason for keeping DST was so that kids in rural areas wouldn't have to wait for the bus in the dark.
2010-03-15, 5:39 PM #23
you have it backwards. in fact, the expansion of dst during both nixon's and bush's terms led to an increase in high velocity child-vehicle interactions as a result of dark.

the main reason dst exists is to reduce the cost of fuel. this is true when it was first created, when nixon expanded it in the 70s, and it was true during bush's cargo cult politicking.

does it work? no.

Jon c' I agree with you 100%. I dont see anywhere in todays 24-hour running world where shifting time back and forth can save the economy, and Nixon did more damage than good for this country.

DST is a timestamp nightmare, especially when countries like Chile decide to delay it for two weeks because of an earthquake.
