Computers: spyware/antispyware broke my internets?

A couple days ago I had to fight off this spyware infection, details of which are ITT.

But weirdly, afterward, I discovered that I could no longer use Dropbox. It wouldn't connect to the server. Then I discovered that I could no longer upload YouTube videos. It would always fail to upload before it started with the descriptive message "Error." Then I discovered that iTunes can no longer connect to the online music store. I can use Steam Friends and download game updates, but the ie-integrated parts like the community and store just 404.

There's probably other apps that have problems I haven't discovered yet. Other things, like Firefox and IM apps, seem to work fine.

Who can solve this mystery?

Someone recently had this issue in #massassi - it turned out the malware had installed a proxy. So check your IE/Network connection settings and make sure a proxy hasnt been setup.

Another possiblity is the malware messed with your HOSTS file - check out this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034

hosts file can only be used to hijack specific sites... I doubt dropbox would be one of them. Proxy seems most likely, since Steam's integrated browser uses the IE engine and would thus use IE proxies but Steam does not for other functionality.

Does browsing with plain IE and Chrome (which uses IE's proxy settings) work or not? Firefox and most other apps will use their own proxy settings. iTunes may also use IE's proxy settings (they WERE intended to be global Internet proxy settings but most apps ignore it... most other settings in there are for IE only anyway).

I just ran microsoft's fix for the HOSTS file and restarted, but as far as I can tell there's been no change.

IE doesn't seem to work. It's acting pretty strange, too. I tried to open google.com and it said it was opening "google.org" and "google.com.net" and a bunch of other sites before telling me it "could not open the search page."

How can I check my proxy settings?

IE proxy settings are in Control panel, internet options, connections tab, and proxy settings are under the LAN settings button
"Nulla tenaci invia est via"

Got it, that fixed it!

Also, fixing my hosts file caused another problem I'm not allowed to talk about :colbert:

Yeah if it can't find a site, it tries tacking .org or .net onto the end, and then finally tries to do a search using the site you entered as a query.

And I told you it wasn't the hosts file :colbert:
