Growing indoor plants with little sunlight
2010-03-22, 5:57 PM #1
Hey, I'm interested in growing some nice small plants in my room to spruce it up a bit for decoration. I have an east-facing room, but as I live in Manchester I don't get much natural sunlight.

Some googling suggests maybe some sort of Ivy, Snake plant or Aloe. Does anyone here have any nice plants in their houses, or suggestions for what I ought grow?

Guys I think this might actually be legit. And not just because it's legal where he lives.

*sigh*

I predicted this. No, I actually genuinely want house plants. I'm far more boring than you give me credit for.

I like snake plants, they're easy and I think they're interesting. I've got a few.

Um, I hate to be like "YOU DUMMY" but seriously

You are asking a bunch of nerds a question about growing houseplants

Go to a nursery, where you would have to go to buy them anyways, and ask the people working there. That way even if it dies, you can look for something you at least like the way it looks.

From pictures, it seems to grow awfully big. I don't know if I have that much room. How tall are your snake plants?

The one in my living room is 2-3 feet tall. It's the same size as it was 2 years ago, I assume because it gets almost no sunlight and we water it about once a month.

It requires a lot of work, makes a mess, and should only be installed over a cement floor.

I recommend some species of shade grass, like http://www.outsidepride.com/seed/grass-seed/shade-grass-seed/ those ones.

Seal the concrete with a rubber sealant. Use rubber strips (Weather stripping works good for this) to separate the substrate layers from the floor so they can drain adequately. Above that, a layer of rubber mesh, then a fine wire mesh. Don't worry about this rusting; it's just to hold the sprouts until they establish a root system. Then a layer of newspaper, spread your seeds on top, and then another layer of newspaper.

Water with a mister, and stay off it until the grass is thick. You need to put down a lot of seed. More than you think. A nice solid layer of it. And, uh. Good luck trimming it. Don't buy sod, too much dirt.

And whatever you do don't let your dog piss on it. ****ing dog.

Or just buy astro turf. :|

I ended up getting a little bonsai tree. The dude assured me it's very easy to look after and should live ok in my room, but it's only been home a few hours and it's not looking especially healthy. If it lives I may get some more.
