Laptop BSODs on startup--can I save the data?

Laptop BSODs on startup with the stop code 0x00000024

I have an XP disc, and normally I would be fine with just reinstalling XP (AGAIN) but I have some stuff on there I'd rather not lose unless I absolutely have to. Is there anything I can do? Is booting from the CD only useful if I'm doing a wipe & reinstall?

Use a Ubuntu live CD and a USB flash drive.

Are you kidding? Just burn a Ubuntu CD and copy paste what you want onto a USB. It's not you need wine or anything. It would take ten minutes+DL time for disk.

I don't actually have a flash drive. Can't Ubuntu burn CDs?
2010-03-27, 11:46 PM #7
Yes, at the very least it would be insanely simple to download some free intestine to make it.
2010-03-27, 11:50 PM #8
Also why the hell don't you have a USB drive.
2010-03-27, 11:54 PM #9
I lost it.

Does Ubuntu automatically connect to wifi networks like Windows?
2010-03-27, 11:56 PM #10
it usually does but if it doesn't it's not hard to manually connect

9.10 does, I know that for sure.

fffuuuu

Tried booting from the Ubuntu disc and the CD drive started buzzing quietly and it said "unable to boot from cd"

I guess I'll try burning a second copy?
2010-03-28, 12:36 AM #13
Burned it again. Same thing. This is mysterious.

Oh man, that computer just doesn't like you does it?
I know the feeling, but then you get the thing to bend over and take in the data port, and you go "**** yeah".

lol

I checked the md5sum of the iso and it is WRONG so maybe it is just a corrupted download. Going to look for a torrent.
2010-03-28, 12:56 AM #16
Ah ha, FF only downloaded 20% of the iso before stopping and pretending it was finished.

This is taking forever so I am going to go to bed and finish this tomorrow. Thanks Tibby & Pommy!

You don't have a flash drive? They are dirt cheap these days

No, you can also use the WinXP disc to do a repair install instead of a full reinstall. Follow these instructions word for word:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

The process is very easy, painless, and quick.

Sweet, windows is back. Just one problem!

I don't have any drivers installed, and I don't know what hardware is in the laptop--graphics card, wireless card, etc. As far as I can tell the device manager just lists them as "unknown." Is there a way to identify them?
2010-03-28, 3:10 PM #20
Tsk tsk, always write it down.
Everest Tools should have you covered, but you should be able to just google the model number or something.

Sounds like the error means the file system on the drive is corrupt and Windows is unable to mount it.

Did you go the Ubuntu CD or WinXP CD Repair Install route?
