Kyle Katarn is the star of two of the best games ever made, maybe not the best, but certainly on the list.
Q.E.D.
Also he trained himself in the force, without any help, got so badass that he decided it was an unfair advantage, and then learned it again.

Wrong, Kyle Katarn is so awesome that his name activates parts of the brain that no other name could, even if it's the same name attached to a different person.

That's because by trimming the path close to the black holes (the Maw), it actually makes the run shorter. As least that's how the books explain it.
2010-03-28, 10:05 PM #9
Kyle Katarn moved the black holes.
2010-03-28, 10:05 PM #10
That IS how the books explain it. But it's still a bunch of vague hand waving to explain a dumb mistake in the movie.
2010-03-28, 10:09 PM #11
It would be sinpler to explain that they just used parsecs for distance, say they used a known spot where they know how long it takes to cross one parsec.
Oh no I'm neckbearding.
2010-03-28, 10:11 PM #12
They do use parsecs for distance. Solo used it for time. That's the mistake in the movie.
2010-03-28, 10:19 PM #13
I know, I was just inventing a better in-universe explanation.
2010-03-28, 10:19 PM #14
Do we have permission to make computer games in his honor?
He who controls the spice controls the universe-

Pissed Off?

Um yes it was?

2010-03-29, 5:02 AM #17
They don't really say WHAT the Kessel run is, it could be a distance related problem.
Bassoon, n. A brazen instrument into which a fool blows out his brains.
2010-03-29, 6:23 AM #18
Yeah, I actually don't think it's that much of a mistake they're trying to cover up. Think about it. The Millennium Falcon was not, and is not the fastest hyperspace-traveling ship in the Star Wars universe. The Outrider, Dash Rendar's ship, was .25 faster than the Millennium Falcon, for instance. So to assume that he is bragging about the speed would be dumb.

Instead, it'd make more sense to brag about the sophisticated hyperspace computer he had aboard, and his navigational skills, that allowed him to make the path shorter (and more dangerous), beating out the competition.
2010-03-29, 7:21 AM #19
And you think Lucas thought of any of that before he wrote the line?

And Han does brag about the speed of his ship, how he can outrun an imperial cruiser. Not the local bulk cruiser, mind you. He's talking about the big Corellian ships now. And she's fast enough for the old man. What's the cargo?

Pick a line, it's 1 parsec long.
Ship crosses this, gets a time to cross it, standardize the measurements.
Bam, parsec now equals time.

2010-03-29, 6:03 PM #28
Well, that's the real trick, isn't it? And it's gonna cost you something extra. Ten thousand, all in advance.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.
2010-03-29, 6:07 PM #29
Ten thousand!? We could almost buy our own ship for that!

[I hope I'm right, I haven't seen the OT in ages]
2010-03-29, 6:10 PM #30
But who's going to fly it, kid? You?
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.
2010-03-29, 6:41 PM #31
You bet I could; I'm not such a bad pilot myself. Look, we don't just have to sit here...

[I hope I'm not too far off... it's a little foggy]

We'll give you two now, plus 15 when we reach Alderaan.

Is this really that uncommon? Whats the origin story behind the Jedi... logically I would assume the first 'Jedi' were all self-trained, perhaps one of the races that has extremely long lifespans were the first to utilize their full potential?

Don't all force 'attuned' individuals use their abilities atleast subconciously?

If this is addressed in Star Wars books, I would like to know how it's handled.

I'm going to guess that some race was really good with the force, E.G Yodas race, and when they got the ability to travel FTL they showed everyone else. I do know for sure that a human training themselves in the force without any help, in a matter of weeks, is pretty awesome.
