Why Wikipedia isn't a great source (well, we already knew, but...)

So I'm watching Family Guy on Hulu, which Mentions Hitler's Mein Kampf, which I've never heard of. So I google and wikipedia it. I read the first few paragraphs, then scroll down. Something catches my eye.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mein_Kampf

In the "Other" section:
Quote:
Hitler Was Later Found Out To Be Gay

In The Second World War, Winston Churchill felt that after Hitler's ascension to power no other book deserved more intensive scrutiny. [9]

Perhaps not an undeserving addition to the page, but I doubt it will be found in many scholarly articles.

It's certainly been theorized, but there is nothing definitive to suggest Hitler was gay.

Wikipedia is a great source if you know how to check the citations

I swear I read an independently done report that actually showed Wikipedia to be MORE accurate than Brittanica

Edit: Hmm guess not, but incredibly close. I still consider that a remarkable achievement, considering it also has more articles.

I reckon the whole "Hitler was gay" hypothesis is a lowbrow attempt to discredit his vision.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

You've never heard of Mein Kampf?

Yes, but you have to ACTUALLY check them, not make sure there is a numerical reference instead of [citation needed].

Cmon Veger, even Squirrel King has heard of Mein Kampf.

You studied Veger?
nope.

I have a business degree. The last history class I took was World History, and it mainly involved the study of the ancient Middle East. 2 of my anthropology courses were Ancient Mexico and History of Africa.

I'm not extremely familiar with every facet of Hitler, WWII, or Nazi Germany.

You should watch the History channel. Everyone but you has the equivalent of a doctorate on WWII, The End of the World, and Bigfoot.

And guys who drive semi trucks on ice... which I'm not really sure why that's relevant to history.

Well thank you everyone for making me feel worse about myself.

(At least there's a smaller chance that I will be affected by Nazi ideaology since I haven't studied the Mein Kompf, BOOM. *drops something significant on the floor and walks out*)

It makes me sad that History is following the same route as TLC and Discovery. When did these channels cease to be about learning and become channels dedicated to showing people doing their jobs and yelling at each other. TLC doesn't really fit that bill anymore, though. It's more... of... jesus... I don't know what you would call the crap that's on TLC these days... It's just sad.

EDIT: I also remember when Travel Channel was about exotic locales and women in bikinis. Now it's about eating.

Yelling at each other, violence, distress, and such items on broadcast bring ratings. People love that ****. I'll admit I am eagerly awaiting Deadliest Catch. However, the other stuff...nah. I like Modern Marvels, Life After People, and Gangland. Modern stuff with historical ties.

Wow, you guys have it real tough with your history channel, the worst we have is a few conspiracy theory based shows (not even weekly things, just one off things), and some crap like nostradamus and the bible code, the majority of the history channel in Australia is still history based programs.

Most of those shows you guys talk about are on the more general entertainment channels here.

Also, that "found out later to be gay" thing is probably just random vandalism.

The important question is: why are you wasting your time watching Family Guy when there are several hundred things better to watch, like flies ****ing.

I have yet to read Mein Kampf, but I hear it's somewhat of an incoherent mess. Any truth to that?

It depends on which English translation you would have read. Some of the translations from the 1930s sound a bit odd.
