Why don't we have 'cheap' SD cards?

I was just thinking .. I mean CDs are impractical. You're not going to lend out an expensive thumb drive. Etc.

Why has no one started to make a cheap SD cards people could use to physically lend out files and such?

I think it would be a good idea.

Basically just the next gen of a floppy disk. But with how tiny they are, it would be cooler. But the idea of them being worthless, you'd just buy a pack of them and wouldn't mind giving them away.

Or am I just crazy as usual?

Ummm what exact size/price are you hoping for? You can find 4gb SD's for <$10. I think the real problems are they are easy to lose (too small), not as durable as flashdrives, and integrated memory card readers arent as ubiquitous as usb ports.

But physical media is pretty much going the way of the dinosaur since high speed networking is available in most locations. It's easier just to upload or transfer your data directly to the recipient.

What if we want to be all :ninja: and not send it over the 'net? Or are giving files to people without internet access?

But I mean cheaper than a couple bucks. I mean like less than a buck for each one.
Even if it's not a wide spread idea, I think it would be useful to be able buy wicked cheap SD cards.

What is your desired capacity

The thing is margins on SD cards for manufacturers are already really low and at the same time people's expectations for storage capacity continually increase as time goes on so even though process advancement/innovation might make manufacturing cheaper so will the bare minimum expectations so they will never be able to hit that low of a price at the prevailing expected capacity.

The idea is sort of like the concept behind netbooks -- performance/efficiency there (in PC tech) has reached a point where the 'low-end' is now sufficient for most whereas the perceived marginal benefit from the high-end is becoming less obvious. The difference in this case I think is that more storage is always perceived as better since SD cards are still relatively low in capacity so process innovation will always lead to pushing the high-end first rather than selling dirt-cheap low-end as with netbooks.
