Earthquakes

There's earthquakes going on now in Southern Cali. About 10 minutes ago, there was a 6.9, and there's been a couple aftershocks since. They are apparently centered in Baja.

This is the first time I've ever felt an earthquake.

MB was on set to film the new Dune movie, in the Baja desert, as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.

Haha, someone was just posting on another forum I check out "is it just me, or did I feel an earthquake?"

Guess he's sane after all.

That doesn't even have Mag 8.0 on it.
So I would assume 8.0 would just annihilate everything.

Yes. A M8.0 would level everything within 25 mi of epicenter

I felt an earthquake in Kentucky that happened in Illinois or Missouri about a year or two ago. I was taking a shower & my entire apartment was shaking. My wife freaked out, screamed that she felt an earthquake, ran to the television to verify & then called her family in France all excited & nervous. I have only felt one other earthquake in my life & I think it was in the 1980s (also in Kentucky). However, I've never experienced anything more than mild shaking & don't really want to.
? :)

A 7.0 on tħe Richter scale (measuring the energy released by the quake) corresponds loosely to a VIII on the Mercalli scale (subjective measurement of the intensity of shaking and damage experienced). The Mercalli scale goes up to XII

Originally posted by Abbreviated Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale:
VIII. Damage slight in specially designed structures; considerable damage in ordinary substantial buildings with partial collapse. Damage great in poorly built structures. Fall of chimneys, factory stacks, columns, monuments, walls. Heavy furniture overturned.

IX. Damage considerable in specially designed structures; well-designed frame structures thrown out of plumb. Damage great in substantial buildings, with partial collapse. Buildings shifted off foundations.

X. Some well-built wooden structures destroyed; most masonry and frame structures destroyed with foundations. Rails bent.

XI. Few, if any (masonry) structures remain standing. Bridges destroyed. Rails bent greatly.

XII. Damage total. Lines of sight and level are distorted. Objects thrown into the air.

Jesus christ, IX is so bad that you can see the ground move.
That would be absolutely amazing to behold if it didn't also mean insta-death.

You're either lying or you're telling the truth.

I've never felt an earthquake. I don't think there are a lot of them in the Eastern states.
2010-04-04, 5:25 PM #15
I experienced a shock of 5.9 when I lived in Cali in 1990 and I remember seeing small waves or ripples in the ground coming at me at an incredible speed, and then feeling as if the ground liquifiyed for a few seconds.

edit: but has everyone noticed that there has been a ****load of major earthquakes lately.

depending on the water table, it may well have been undergoing liquifaction.

We had one in VA during my 1st year of college (03-04). Wasn't too bad (~ 4.5), but certainly evoked a minor 'wtf' from us... except for the football players on my hall. They went crazy. "Did you guys feel that?! DID YOU GUYS FEEL THAT?!!?! OMG THAT WAS SO AWESOME! WHAT DO WE DO NOW?!"

Operative word subjective in there. We have A LOT of homes here in San Diego that were built WELL before any established earthquake building codes. Modern homes, sure, but if you go up and down Ditmar St. in Oceanside, you will find a lot of homes built in the 50s that will easily crumble in a M7 or even a M6 quake if they have not done earthquake retrofitting.

It was a pretty crazy earthquake. Someone said that it felt like being in a canoe on the open sea, and I'd have to say that's a good analogy. It lasted for half a minute and it was almost hard to keep balance. It wasn't like the normal sharp moving ones, but it was strong and long lasting.

I didn't feel it. I was asleep at the time. Having lived here for my entire life, earthquakes aren't a very big deal. They are funny, however, when someone from out of state is around and starts freaking out when things start rocking.

I was enjoying the earthquake. Certainly made my rather dull Easter Sunday more exciting.

Anybody feel shaking at about 4 AM last night? I woke up and I swear I felt shaking.

VA is on a pretty serious though mostly inactive fault line.

There were 3 confirmed casualties from the earthquake. 2 people died from the effects of the quake itself, and one person died when they PANICED, RAN INTO THE STREET, AND GOT HIT BY A CAR.

Am I a horrible person for laughing when I heard that?

That was a hilarious event.

Every news channel showed the same four bricks that fell off a building in downtown for DAYS.
