Religious group harrasses peoples grieviance

I couldnt believe what the Hell I was just reading on msn, a church group called the westboro baptist church (they dont deserve capitilization) was picketing a funeral of a Military Personnel that was killed in action about four years ago. Sue me if this is old news, but what the **** is wrong with some people...

They've done this a lot.

In fact I believe that they're banned from setting foot in several countries.
nope.
2010-04-13, 6:10 PM #3
If they didn't have police protection someone would have run them all over with a bus by now.
2010-04-13, 6:13 PM #4
These religious fanatics are almost as bad as the same people that would burn your flag, or put a burning cross in your front yard, or a burning effigy and slaughter your pets. Its no wonder I left religion years ago. In my mind these people are just as bad as Radical Islamics. This pisses me off.

I really don't see a problem with flag burning.

OH GAWD JESUS AMERICA CHRIST. HE JUST DONE BURNED A PIECE OF FABRIC.

Really. If you knew what it represented it wouldn't make a difference. It really isn't even speech.
2010-04-13, 6:21 PM #6
Ok so what with the flag, but these *******s have no right to harass someone that is mourning the loss of a loved one that was just doing his duty and gets killed. that should not be a right in our free speech, thats just plain emotional harm. Maybe this baptist church supports the al-queda

No, they protest funerals of soldiers because the united states hasn't made homosexuality illegal or some ****. They say it's punishment for allowing homosexuals to live or some crazy nonsense.

They're somewhere between a cult and a family of professional trolls. Many of them are attorneys, and they live off of the fines they collect when their protests are unlawfully dispersed.
2010-04-13, 6:40 PM #9
I never understood how they were allowed to protest at funerals. It's that harassment?
2010-04-13, 6:43 PM #10
They protest far enough away, and on public land. Technically they can do it. And there's really no way the Supreme Court can tell them not to without basically screwing over a lot of first amendment cases in the future.

I think they should all move down to a secluded portion of jungle and establish their little kingdom and then declare that God told them that they must now leave the earth by committing a mass suicide. Sorry but thats how I feel. Because I lost a good friend in the war. no offense to anyone, but thats another reason why I walked away from religion.

It's just a matter of time until some former servicemen get together and slay the WBC anyway.

I really like the idea of collecting pledge funds for military families at Phelps protests.

Honestly, that's one scenario where I would just say "well, you have put yourself in this position."

Do you really think it's a great idea to protest at the funerals of those who killed for a living an have an unmatched sense of group solidarity? I mean, you're just asking for trouble.

You walked away from religion because some people who call themselves Christians do terrible things?
2010-04-13, 7:40 PM #17
Jon, I understand that you're being facetious, but are you suggesting that to be an improper reason to walk away from religion, as opposed to something like reason or logic?

I believe it is literally ironic to judge an entire group of people because some of them are judgmental, yes.
2010-04-13, 8:12 PM #19
That's very true, but perhaps Darth Dan sees the potential for this kind of behavior as a reason why religion should be discouraged from the get go.

I hope not, because that is the dumbest and most dangerous argument an intelligent creature can possibly make.

I was reading an article about this last week. Apparently a pissed off dad is fighting them relentlessly after they picketed his son's funeral. Recently he received a slap in the face when some court ordered him to pay 16.5k to the church in court fees. (too lazy to find links or start a squabble over which news site I linked to)

I saw someone should do the world a favor and throw them all in a gas chamber.

Let's not spoil Darth Dan's moment. Let's give him some resources to strengthen his newly found anti-religious sentiments. :)

I believe its more than ironic for a fundamentalist group of so-called christians that just about bashes most other non malicious organizations and calls it a duty under God. Its just like you said they are a cult. Nothing but a group of hate mongers that need to leave people the hell alone. Their protests are just plain hateful and not for a good cause.

If anything, flag burning is a celebration of the right to burn a flag. The right to not be persecuted due to actions others find unfavorable.

Im not stating that Im anti-christian, I just cant stand these so-called followers of god that are very much doing things that are definitly wrong in the eyes of god.

edit: Or its not justifiable for the right of mankind.

Wrong in the sense of 1 Corinthians 5:12-13, in particular.

Guess I'll have to go find my bible and blow the dust off of it and research this scripture.

I don't think the WBC is affiliated with any other religious group. I know they're not affiliated with other mainstream Protestant groups like the Southern Baptist Convention or Assemblies of God.
2010-04-13, 10:21 PM #31
The most interesting theory I heard (forget from where) was that the WBC was the front for a group that's trying to get free speech restricted by performing publicity stunts that push people to reconsider the right of free speech.

Of course, it was posted by an internet crackpot, but was an interesting theory. More probably they're just a family of homophobic *******s that found a way to live off of doing stupid ****. I'm a little surprised one of these dead soldiers' family members or friends hasn't killed their patriarch yet.
2010-04-13, 10:33 PM #32
Someone should set up protests in front of their protests with like double the numbers, just to aggravate them.

It could be possible that the church is actually a joke that people took seriously.
Alternate Character Interpretation: It's a popular belief that the church was actually made to make fun of Christianity and lead people to supporting gay rights.
For awhile there was a biker gang that formed that protested the protesters. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

You're absolutely correct when you suggest that they don't really believe anything they say, but you're wrong about the motivation. It's not a joke, it's a business. The Phelps family makes a living by making you angry. Every time someone attacks them at a military funeral, they get to sue the attacker, the military, the police force that failed to protect them and the municipality for failing to protect their first amendment rights.

Fred Phelps was one of the most prominent civil rights attorneys back in the 60s and 70s.

Fred Phelps is going to die soon enough. Massassi should take a field trip to protest his funeral.

First - I find the westboro baptist church to be absolutely appalling. Louis Theroux did an interesting documentary about them "The Most Hated Family in America." It provides a different view on them, but certainly doesn't make their cause better.

I just find it disrespectful. I mean, I grew up knowing a lot of veterans so maybe I have a different perspective on it all?
