The Good News: A new Xcom game

The Heart Breaking News: Its gonna be another ****ing FPS game

Discuss.

Why can't ****ing developpers come up with something better than a god damn first person shooter to revive a series?

The FPS formula is so easy to follow.

It also makes the most money.

TURN BASED FPS.

Except that the FPS genre in no way applies to an XCOM title. They are basically just leeching off an old-school name and story, which is a shame.

Sure the top-down, turn-based style gameplay is archaic but they could try a little originality. At the very least go for a 3rd person tactical shooter that allows you to customize your character and team.

But this is blatantly becoming another case where they solely focus on the money-making aspect instead of trying to actually push the boundaries of gaming with new, innovative ideas.

What about X-Com Interceptor? Did it fit?

Honestly, I wasn't even away of a space flight simulator and obviously didn't play it, but it does strike me as a departure from an otherwise excellent series. Still a flight simulator is better than yet another lack luster alien-shooting FPS.

X-Com Interceptor was a strategy game, too. I don't think it's going to be as bad as you think.

Hopefully not, I'm just biased against the FPS genre as whole. It feels to me like a tired, old formula even in recent games such as Modern Warfare 2 and Bioshock.

That's probably because Modern Warfare 2 is a rehash of the same old CoD formula since 2003 and BioShock is a rehash of the same old System Shock 2 format since 1999.

The titles I gave were just examples, they all feel like rehashes. The best they've managed to pull so far is a sand-box type feel in a FPS (Farcry 2). Aside from that its the same old running down linear maps gunning most everything with a little story leading you through.

Turok was the last great FPS.
2010-04-15, 9:02 AM #13
Turok as in the original Turok yes?

There's been good fps, and many of them are entertaining to one level or another, but I just don't think the FPS genre can do XCOM justice.

Just wanted to follow up - I agree w/ Emon about MW2 and BioShock. In regards to the upcoming game, though, I have some faith in 2K Games. Also, I'm not sure a turn-based X-Com game would really sell well today.

Doesn't need to be turn-based. There'd be ways to revisit the strategic, team-customizing, close-quarters gameplay without it having to be turn-based. We'll see. maybe I'll be totally wrong and they'll really blow me away, but right now, I'm dreading yet another generic FPS.

I sort of wish there was a Star Control 3. Deus Ex 2!

You know, for real.

God, a Star Control game like #2 with modern graphics and more user friendly, without being too toned down.
I would give my foot for it.

Hell, with motivation like that, I bet even Massassi could pull that off.
