BOOM SHAKALAKA!
Think while it's still legal.

They should make playable furry races

Maybe they could shore up their fanbase with people from Second Life

Wait... people still play that?

About a year ago, I subscribed again for a month and everywhere I went was empty. Sucked. Was looking for nostalgia but can't find it in an empty world. It's possible everybody migrated to places I had never been, but I didn't play long enough to find them.

Same.

I'm fine with Asheron's Call as a singleplayer game. Problem is, they've changed the original content so much that there isn't even any nostalgia to be found. And their graphics patch made the game look worse - their new textures were phoned in by a miserably bad Chinese contractor and their new graphics code is glitchy.

It just isn't the game we all played anymore.

That is highly likely. Even happens in WoW.

Not really. In AC's case, the people just aren't playing anymore.

A few years ago they added Marketplace to offset the dwindling populations. It was a special dungeon that any player could instantly travel to with one command. Insanely busy - 24/7 it'd be packed with buffbots and trade bots. The last time I played it was empty.

Last time any of us played regularly was quite a few years ago. Even back then, at peak time the servers had what, 1500 people usually? I imagine it's only a few hundred per server at peak times these days...

Aaah the memories. I never played, but I remember a time where every second phrase posted on these forums had either AC or Asheron's Call in it. :P

Haha, that takes me back. I can't believe that game is still going. Gotta give credit to Turbine though. That they're still updating it is amazing. Well, that or its the only thing keeping the company afloat. I don't know of any other games released by them. :P

Edit: Just checked it out. I guess they do D&D online and Lord of the Rings online too.
Life is beautiful.

Neither of which are keeping them afloat, for sure. :P

Ragnarok Online is still getting updates as well, and it has a LOT more players, sadly.

About 350, IIRC.

Actually LOTRO has a pretty big player base and is definately more lucrative for Turbine than Asheron's Call. (And no, I dont play. Havent done so in years.)

I played a bit about a month ago, then moved into my new apartment where the free wifi has it blocked.

Darktide is now the largest server by far, followed by Frostfell. The others lag behind, and can get as low as 30 people logged in (Verdantine off-peak). There are still bots and PK/PKL people fighting in marketplace most times of the day. There's also a number of global chat channels that are always active and make the world seem less empty.

I'd still be playing now if it worked here, playing as a shadow seems interesting.

I don't think that I could ever allow myself to get sucked by in to an MMORPG. However, I must admit that The Old Republic is looking quite good.
? :)

I'd resubscribe to Asheron's Call in a heartbeat... if they rolled it all back to December 1999.
2010-04-15, 7:48 PM #18
I'm not sure what ruined Asheron's Call more... SplitPea or Ken Troop.

AC is one of those things of which my fond memories would only be damaged by going back and trying to re-live it again. AC acheived perfection in 1999 and there it shall remain.

was that when I was still playing Jonath Clark or was that after I gave the account to lightstaff?
2010-04-16, 1:07 PM #22
Good question. I had forgotten about that. Probably after.

I remember when Paraduck was in our monarchy. He'd put the wrong inscriptions on items and sell them at Teth. Eventually got kicked out for it, right?
