So recently I tried out the Trial for WoW and Eve Online, and I could see how people really get into these games. They are actually kinda of fun, I purposely avoided them up until this point but I could also see how they could become repetitive and maybe boring (I don't know about Eve cause I just started it).

But what MMOs are you playing?

I used to play EverQuest (EQ), Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) & World of Warcraft (WoW). I had to quit playing because it was turning me in to a fat nerd & I eventually wanted to have a chance at getting married & mating w/ someone who wasn't also a fat nerd. I've gone from 205 lbs to 185 lbs & gotten married to a non-fat nerd since then but I'm still working on the nerd part.

WoW is boring as hell unless you like attempting to kill the same insanely hard boss over and over and over and over and over and over and over in an attempt to get a better item. Said bosses usually require immense amounts of planning and teamwork, which ends up resulting in more attempts since it rarely goes to plan.

Eve Online is PVP. If you don't like PVP, don't play Eve. Eve requires a significant amount of time spent doing things that many call boring, and you're always at risk of losing a good chunk of your hard earned cash. Wars and gang battles are the best of Eve.

Hmm, because of my weakness for addicting games I generally steer clear from the MMOs (especially the paid ones). No really, when playing games like pokemon (yes, pokemon) I usually spend a lot of time with training the creatures. Same thing when playing games with upgrades, I always want to get 'all the upgrades', get the best equipment or train to the highest level. I guess that if I would be playing MMOs, I would have the same tendency to 'get all the upgrades' and 'train myself' and I would lose a lot of money.

So, to answer your question: none

Most MMOs are basically single player games with optional co-op and a monthly fee. EVE pretty much forces player interaction at every possible location, even if you are trying to solo play it. The best way to play EVE and minimize boring is to make some friends.

Also I hear Tyrannus is making just about every item in the game player made.

That's right at end-game, and only for getting the absolute best gear which will of course be considered weak in a couple of months time, I like it up till that point.
Some people don't go with that and just pvp ridiculous amounts, that's fun for a while but I dunno...

Usually once I got to max level I'd use them to fund new characters, taking more joy out of leveling and being in a chatty guild.
That was the main incentive to keep playing really, talking with all the gamer friends about everything and anything.

Eve I found boring right from the word go, and got worse as I tried to play more.

As someone who has played a lot of different MMOs, I must say that in my opinion, WoW is the very best, most seem very shallow in comparison.
But still, it's a grind (like most, if not all, MMOs), and if you don't like grinds then stay away.
WoW is also extremely boring if you don't get into a guild you can have fun with (or it is for me anyway). It's great if you can talk, and try crazy things in the game just because.

I have basically the exact opinion Deadman does on the subject.

But also, zan, if you want to keep going on WoW, it's important to get to know people that play and play with them. If you want to start on my server I'll hook you up with some bags and gold to make the leveling process a bit less frustrating. This offer goes for anyone here, actually.

I'm on Dragonmaw and my main is a lvl 80 mage named Mikamue. Hit me up in-game, and if I'm not online send me a message through the mail system.

I had a ton of fun playing WoW until I reached the higher levels. Then it was boring .. and time consuming. I'd have to sink hours into a raid instead of just logging in and doing this or that for a short while.

I had a great guild, good friends, but it just started to require too much time to do anything fun really.

I enjoyed WoW for a while. I used to enjoy SWG too before they made it suck.

WoW, Vanguard, Aion, City of Heroes/Villains, Everquest, Everquest 2, League of Legends, SWG...

I am back in WoW now after the 5th or 6th time quitting and coming back... It's so easy now it's ridiculous. They certainly have made this game casual friendly.

Nonetheless I've started my fourth or fifth character, and my THIRD Rogue, on Illidan. 2 weeks of barely playing and I'm already level 43.

i dont believe in paying for a game more than once.

unless its a really good game, and my original copy is ruined or lost...

The last MMO I played was Aion back in september, and before that it was WoW until January 2009.

Something like

2004 - First MMO, SWG
2004 - Everquest 2
2005 - WoW
2006 - None
2007 - WoW:BC
2008 - WoW:BC
2008 - Age of Conan
2008 - Warhammer
2008 - WoW:WotLK
2009 - WoW:WotLK (until Jan 19)
2009 - Aion (September/Octobre)

I don't have a pc right now but will likely buy a new one in October. Right now the MMOs that interest me are Final Fantasy XIV and Star Wars : OLd Republic

I'm still steadily slogging through FFXI.

Used to play SWG, too. I miss Jump to Lightspeed.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

So far I'm enjoying Eve. I like the skill system. The one thing about WoW that killed me was all the running around. There isn't like an 'auto run' is there?
"Nulla tenaci invia est via"
2010-04-18, 12:18 PM #15
the 'follow' feature helps if you need to travel by foot. Just follow someone in your party!
2010-04-18, 12:33 PM #16
and yes there is an auto run. (default is the Num Lock key)

Also, it's a lot better than it used to be, since you get your mounts at a much lower level.

Really? What level do you get mounts now?
I had to wait till level 40.
2010-04-18, 1:01 PM #18
They were 30 last time I played.
I remember back when it was 40 *sigh*

Can't remember what level you get flying mounts...

Flying mounts? PFt. Non-existent when I played :P
2010-04-18, 1:11 PM #20
Non-existent when I first played either.

But they are seriously awesome!

I played EVE in 2007; had a lot of fun with it. Not looking to jump into any other MMOs in the near future though.

You get mounts at 20, and new mount at 40
2010-04-18, 1:22 PM #23
At 20? Holy crap that's ridiculous.

I've played:
  • AirRivals
  • Anarchy Online
  • Asheron's Call
  • Asheron's Call 2
  • Dungeon Runners
  • Eve Online
  • EverQuest
  • EverQuest 2
  • Final Fantasy XI
  • Guild Wars Prophecies
  • Kingdom of Loathing
  • Lord of the Rings Online
  • MapleStory
  • Planetarion
  • Planetside
  • Puzzle Pirates
  • Toontown Online
  • Ultima Online
  • Warhammer Online
  • World of Warcraft

and I've played these for longer than a month:
  • Asheron's Call
  • Ultima Online
  • World of Warcraft

and if you have a time machine, you should play these:
  • Asheron's Call (Beta 2 to the end of Sudden Season, assuming you're high enough level to do the Frore quest by then.)
  • Ultima Online (pre-Renaissance.)

edit: but if you don't have a time machine, you should play these:
  • [N/A]

because modern MMORPGs are all dull, bland, Asheron's Call 2 ripoffs that hold your hand from start to finish.

Final Fantasy XI, I'd almost forgotten about that one...
Well, when I say forgotten I mean tried to block out the mind-numbing torturous boredom from my mind.

yeah,
first mount at lvl 20, epic mount at lvl 40, flying mount at lvl 60, and epic flying mount at lvl 70. Up until epic flying mount, it's relatively inexpensive.

I used to play tons of SWG. Had a Jedi character back when it was awesome to be a Jedi.

The only MMO that I've played and really enjoyed was City of Heroes but that lost its appeal after a couple weeks really.

PlanetSide wasn't too bad.
nope.

I tried WoW for a couple of months once, but I got bored.
