$200 after rebate and it's available on SERO (my epic Sprint plan).

Hmm.

A friend of mine has one, it's a great phone. The only downside is that sometimes (a couple of times per week), it experiences a short 'cpu lag', and you'll be waiting for approximately a second for the phone to finish whatever it is doing.
I would do it, I'm not really familiar with mobile phone prices in America, so I don't know if $200 is a lot of money for that phone...

I have a Palm Centro now and it likes to freeze completely every now and again. I timed over three minutes once before I pulled the battery...it reset and had a new text. Yep, a text will sometimes kill the phone if it's trying to do something else.

The price doesn't really concern me- I'll have it for at least two years so I'm more concerned about the practicality / usefulness of the phone.

I hear reflashing the ROM helps a lot with slow speed issues, so I will probably do that.

You're going to buy a WinMo 6 phone now?

The list of good phones available on SERO is not very long. I pay $34.xx (including taxes) per month. I don't want to pay twice that just to have the latest and greatest.

It's a good phone for what it is, but it is WinMo6, and thus will be made irrelevant and dead in half a year.

Also, I'd check (although I doubt it is) if the EVO is going to be on it. The EVO is going to be easily the best phone out there.

No Web-OS, no Android, no Samsung Instinct. Not a chance in hell I'll get the EVO as an option.

So basically, there aren't ANY good phones. I wouldn't call WinMo6 to be good :P

Touch Pro 2 is just HTC's last best attempt at making the old crappy OS suck less. They really tried, but it's still WinMo6 under all that custom UI.

Ever use a Palm Centro?

yeahhhh. That's what I have. I'm tired of it freezing up for minutes (I timed over three once..then I pulled the battery) when it gets a text message while I'm trying to do something else.

That's probably why they stopped making it, you know. Same reason they're abandoning the old WinMo in WinMo7 :P

Yeah, except I don't hear anyone saying the TP2 sucks. I hear them saying that future phones are better..which doesn't help me at all. :P

Well, if you're not really concerned about the price, I could recommend a HTC HD2, it is a large phone, so it's not one of those phones you can put in your pocket. My dad has one, it's very robust, extremely fast and it's getting a Windows Mobile 7 update very soon. The touchscreen is very responsive and it has a nice resolution. I'd ditch my phone anytime for the HD2 if I had the money :downs:

LIts my understanding that when verizon gets their nexus one sprint will be next to follow. It only makes sense considering the conversion to cdma for vzw would open up a huge money market for sprint to jump in on.

My experience with windows mobile is a bleak tasteless OS where the most simple tasks for every day cellphone use are elongated substantially by winmo. Granted the tp2 runs touchflo 3d; i would venture a guess that if you do enough tinkering the same old winmo problems will rear their ugly head. Touchflo is equivelant to spraying perfume on a pile of dog crap.
2010-04-18, 11:31 AM #15
did you say conversion to cdma by verizon? You realize that's what they use and have used for a hell of a long time...
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

You misunderstood my post. The nexus one is only manufactured as a GSM phone currently. In order for the nexus one to be ported to Verizon they will need to construct a cdma model, thus opening up the android market for sprint.

No current phone will have an upgrade path for WinMo7. It was originally commented that it would be so, but Microsoft has come out and explicitly said otherwise.

Not available on my plan. I am concerned about price overall, just not the $200 (I pay $34/mo for unlimited data/text/etc).

If that's the case, I really wouldnt bother with the TP2. A shame really that they wasted such a great keyboard on such an already aged platform.

I'm not too familiar with sprint phones but the palm pre is a solid handset. Web OS is probably not going to advance much further but for what it is, it definitely gets the job done. I believe emon and CM know a great deal about the pre if I am remembering correctly from previous threads.

Honestly if you enjoy sprint and wish to stay with them, I would hold out for an android handset. Its only a matter of time and definitely worth the wait.

If I'm going to get any more phone options, I'll have to pay twice per month what I do now. Not too keen on that, to be honest.

Er, you didn't really say WHY you didn't want those. You gave no indication that it would change your monthly plan?

Yeah, that's not exactly clear -- he probably didn't know what SERO is. It's hard to tell if you were saying "no webOS, no Android" for the reason of "too expensive" or "I don't like it."

No sense retyping what I've already typed... :P

I guess the general consensus is that there are numerous phones far superior to the Touch Pro 2, but not a single one of them is available to me unless I change plans or providers.

Pretty much. I think what it comes down to is that Sprint wants to eliminate SERO entirely (and has in the past managed to get people off of SERO), and so only offers phones that they can't get rid of normally/don't cost them much of anything.

I imagine you're absolutely right - they're certainly not making much money off of it, so I don't see the incentive they would have to keep people on it.

I have considered switching plans, but I'd be looking at $60/mo to get anything with unlimited data...and that's $360/year extra. Is it really worth that ($720 over the life of the phone)? For some people, maybe...but for me? I doubt it.

Josh, be "that guy" that stays in the grandfathered plan for 20 years and they can't do crap about it, cause it's in your contract. :p

Maybe try and get Sprint to give you a better phone because it's sucking? :/

I'm not so much saying that it's worth getting a more expensive plan right now, just that it doesn't matter much what you pick if you don't.

I use the Touch Pro 2. Love it so far, great keyboard. Get screen protectors for sure. The sprint nav sucks, but the google maps app works okay.

I use it for internet to my laptop (For Free) since sprint doesn't support it. This works as a wireless router as well. I also have NES roms on it that work almost perfectly, the sound gets a little buggy, but it plays perfect.

I also like to use it for Pandora when I'm out and about. The calls are clear, good speakers (both ear and loud), touch screen works good. I don't really like the slide to answer feature but that's probably just due to it being my first touch. Also, sprint just released Win 6.5 for it a month or so ago. I still need to upgrade to that.

I think the only downsides to the phone is battery life and weight.
