Worst day ever to be a tech support rep.

That is all.

More later.

remember when microsoft was going to add address space layout randomization to vista 32, and then the antivirus vendors colluded and threatened to sue microsoft if they did it, because it'd break their kernel hooks?

kernel hooks that were really important for keeping the computer secure and allowing them to do things like destroy the operating system?

av vendors are pretty much the dumbest and worst people. their products never even work anymore. anything worth being afraid of is just going to kill anything that reads its memory pages.

It was XP only. Didn't break my work at all either and we use XP!

(And yeah the official McAfee announcement said it affected only a small subset of corporate customers, although the reaction indicates it was more than "small".)

The "small subset" consists of organizations that deploy updates aggressively. You know. Like you probably should...

What's amusing is that the official fix from McAfee is exactly what our sysadmin wrote at 1:45pm yesterday, about 2 hours after it started. Their fix came out sometime this morning, it seems..

Corporations don't use MSE because it has no centralized management interface. With the corporate versions of typical commercial AV products, you can detect every machine on the network, force installations/updates on it, etc.

Isn't that what Group Policies are for?

Edit: Also, there's this, which is essentially MSE packed into a bunch of enterprise-level stuff:

It's a much newer product and enterprises have been using 3rd-party stuff for a really long time. Like you know, since before ms had an AV solution.
