Is the JKhub dying?
2010-04-24, 8:38 AM #1
I visit the sister website from time to time and it looks like a ghost town. Is the JK realm all together dying?

nah, Star Wars as a whole is dying, until Lucas releases all 6 in 3D and another generation of dumb teenagers buys into his marketing

JK is from 1997

Well, TODOA's subtitle was "The JK Project To End All JK Projects OR Prove Me Wrong"

So yeah, JK's been dead for years and people are focusing their necrophiliac needs elsewhere.

When I started working on (what became) TODOA around July 2008, there were still a handful of people (Xzero and SM_Sith_Lord to name a few) working on relatively many JK projects but by the time it was released there was only... well, me and the contest editors (most of them had just jumped onboard for one final last JK editing attempt in September anyhow).

Last time I checked, #jkhub only had people talking about Left for Dead 2 or haxing, Zeq being a braindead yak, lucky_jackpot popping in now and then (:) :D) and various ping timeouts.

Thats what I was wondering about, my project is almost finished (It will never top TODOA thats for sure) will never get a chance for a release or there will not be any community to take a glance at it. I know that JK is antiquated, but this will be my last creation from JK, and the project that Im making now since 2007 has dragged out too long and was not to be so large in the first place.:(

Well, I always knew TODOA was going to have a miniscule audience but I still went through it since I figured out that if I had never finished any of my numerous endless JK projects I would have ended up reviving them again in a few years. I doubt the remnants of the editing community are going to last that long.

So you better finish what you have started. I'll surely be around to play it, I'd have to rig JK up for Windows 7 first, though... *shivers*

I don't think it's great that JK's dying, I don't think it's bad, it's just inevitable, and not in some sort of sorrowful way... it just makes complete sense that after this much time, interest would wane. I don't get why this comes as a surprise to some.
2010-04-24, 11:00 AM #11
Its a surprise to me that JK has been around this long, I knew that its going to die some time, but I wish that I could of indulged myself in its realm a little sooner. Oh well thats life.

Everything dies, so yes it's dying.

Question is, does it matter? It will die when it is time for it to die. It's not like it'll contract internet cancer and die before its time.

I don't really count the contest levels, they started production before TODOA was finished and at one point they were meant to be released first anyhow.

(Then again it's just a silly subtitle anyhow but I'll keep my hopes up for a TODOA KILLER... wink wink... nudge nudge..)

I started it when the contest was announced. Three months baby. Just because you took years. Count it boy.

Everytime you pop up trying to say your level was.. the what? - "The JK Project To End All JK Projects OR Prove Me Wrong" - I always pop up. Ha :D

But the point of the subtitle is to emphasize that the chances of anyone making a JK project as overambitious as TODOA are slimmer than ever. For instance, there were a lot more folks around editing JK in 2008 (when I started the A/TODOA stuff) than there are now. And JK's corpse has gradually been withering away since 2002.

So while it's quite likely that there won't be any major new JK (SP) releases in the near future, I still have this wish that somebody's going to prove me wrong and make a nice new JK/MotS adventure for us to play. Not that I'm refreshing JKHub every 2 minutes expecting something like that to pop up, but it'd still be nice.

Yet as a comparison, Wolfenstein 3D is really going strong. Or at least going on. There must have been more updates on that site this year than in whole Massassi since 2007!

Before I guess. When the level starts off, you enter a big room, and to the left there is a control room with a couple troopers in it, and there's a control for the big hanger door on the other side of the big room. When you enter that room and kill all the baddies (one armed with a rocket launcher), the only place to really go is on the left hand side. You enter into an empty room that has a drop in part of the floor, and there is a turret that fires at you through the doorway of another room or hall or something. When I approach the room/turret, I crash. I've tried holding various weapons and being in 1st/3rd person, and I tried it on 800x600 once, but it always just crashed.

Hmm, it's the area where you have to blow up the door to activate a switch to move on.

When the player reaches a certain radius (or sector, can't remember if JK was sophisticated enough for the former), a sound will be triggered from the other side of the door so that might cause the crash... I guess it's computer specific.

This would be fine if it wasn't your own level... you divert jk topics to talk about your own stuff which is a little annoying especially when you give it that subtitle. TODOA was good but self proclaiming it as "The JK Project To End All JK Projects OR Prove Me Wrong" just makes you look arrogant and puts all other work released afterwards down.

I've been working on my map.. well actually it took a back seat because for some reason I cannot get the unofficial JK patch working correctly and it's kind of hard to test the map when it requires it.

I do get on JKHub every once in a while to see progress on any projects though.

You know, I can actually see what you're meaning, I'm sorry about that. Though of it more like a light jab akin to "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb".

Think of it as a challenge, a means of trying to get someone to release something great once more. "My project is definitive, please release something great to prove me wrong so that we can all enjoy that new release."
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
