I didn't laugh. Mario Bros. Wii wasn't like that, why would that one be? I dunno... not even a chuckle. Maybe it's all the chinese food I just ate.

Yeah, all the jokes there would somewhat apply more to PC/360 games, and even then a lot of it was a stretch. Facebook prompts for achievements? Really?

This was really dumb, not funny at all, and not even remotely like Nintendo.

This seems like more of a targeted attack at the video game industry as a whole rather than nintendo. It's obviously exaggerated but not by much, and I'm sure soon enough it won't be a joke at all.
Think while it's still legal.

I've never really liked achievements. Except for in TF2 when they used to mean something.

yes, but it's true, every point is valid albeit in the wrong perspective. I also get annoyed with the 'mainstreaming' of games these days. Nothing is 'hardcore' anymore (why even the word hardcore?). Oblivion was nothing compared to morrowind. It was a frickin' cakewalk, the leveling was really poor designed (because of the whole leveled lists). The new splinter cell, yes it's awesome. But it is not splinter cell anymore. No more sneaking, just blowing through guns blazing. Fallout 3, yes, awesome again. But choices you make as a character seem to have little impact to the game.

I'm not against progress in an industry, but it seems everyone is jumping on the lets-make-the-game-easier-so-everyone-can-play-it bandwagon. I personally hate that

In general, I hate achievements/trophies, I hate facebook and other social network sites, and I hate this trend where people think every little thing they do in life should be shared with the world. I don't care what your gamer score is, whether you went to a party last night, or even whether it's your birthday (well, I care for my closest friends, you know, the ones I see in real life or keep in contact with in ways other than some web site that I fed their personal information into). I also hate pay-to-dl-content which has largely replaced fan-built levels/addons which were the main reason I stayed with PC gaming for so long. *sigh*

That's because many of the people who made fan-made content went one step further and started making wholly new material. See also: the indie developer movement.

I actually like where it is going, and I hope it continues. Achievements you may not be interested in, and you may not care about what others are doing, but no one is forcing that down your throat.

Besides, modding still sees great success. See also: TF2.

I like achievements, but I hate the ones which are nothing but a grind, they serve no purpose and they're not difficult - just tedious. Open world games like GTA are especially bad for this. I also don't like achievements that you get just by playing the game, at the very least you should need to beat the game on a the non-easiest difficulty to get any kind of 'progress' achievement.

I like achievements that reward players for deviating from easy way of doing things. Beating a level without getting seen at all, or without using a gun/magic/whatever.

Indie games are cool. They're the only reason PC gaming is still even a little bit fun. But all the big companies are now doing XBOX/PS3 and not releasing modding tools. Or if they do, it's a year later and only works on DRM-crippled games that I refuse to buy anyway. (well, that and my computer sucks)

I do miss indie studio games quite a bit. There are still some around but everything seems to be hugely marketed and hyped up. Don't get me wrong, some of the huge titles are totally worth it (ME2 for example) but I miss small niche games like Anachronox, Omikron, etc.

How was Anachronox a small, niche, indy game? It was made by a huge studio with huge financial backing and was advertised for years in major magazines and whatnot.

I don't particularly like achievements either, though I will say that the Steam ones don't suck as much as the endless 360 ones. The PS3 trophy things are a little better than the xbox ones too.
nope.

Well sure the studio may have been "big" at its time, but Anachronox was throw out after the Daikatana disaster, on what was already an aging engine and was thus thrown under the rug but its developer. Many gamers have yet to play the game despite how well it was advertised. Its incredibly underrated and relatively undiscovered in comparison to other huge titles of its time and present day. That is why I throw it in the same class.

I chuckled at the link. So true.

I like achievements. I'll put a game in I haven't played in a while just to go back and try to get the achievements I missed. Then I can rub it in my friends faces that they suck at video games and should just cash them in.
