Humble Indie Bundle windows vs. mac vs. linux

Since the last thread on the indie bundle I had been watching their stats graph and was surprised that linux had ~25% of the "purchases." Looks like it's lowered since then, but the wolfire dude posted some info on the amount of $ users of each platform contribute.

I find this interesting because the rationale most companies uses to dismiss linux support is to say linux users want everything for free.

Personally, I go out of my way many times to buy something with Linux support solely for that reason (see: every Unreal Tournament ever, even though I didn't really like them). Not sure this is a net positive, but there it is.

I almost wonder if it's just that the linux users who bought the bundle didn't even realize the games supported linux until word of this bundle started spreading.

Okay so it has 25% of the purchases, but what percentage of the money?

Edit: Read the article. That's interesting, although I wonder more if it's just Linux users coming out in droves because they advertise their support for Linux. Besides, I don't think that it would apply so well to more commercial-level games. After all, there have been Linux-capable games before, but they never did well on the Linux side.

Linux users are conditioned not to look in retail for linux games, so if one or two come through the pipeline, they will be missed. I think the price point has a lot to do with it, too. A couple of bucks is much easier to swallow than 60 bucks. That said, bigger games with linux support have done well -- quake series, nwn, UT, etc. In a lot of cases it's hard to quantify whether people bought the game for windows or linux. For example, I think the quake3 cd didn't come with the linux client, you had to download it after.

I'm a Linux (Ubuntu), Mac (OSX) & Windows (7) user. I downloaded all 3 versions & paid $10. I think it's important to point out that in this day & age there are a lot of people that use more than 1 operating system. I also think it would be interesting to see the average income for people that use each operating system. I think that it's likely that the average Mac user would have more money than the average Windows user considering the hardware price difference. Also, I would guess that the Linux crowd would be mostly developers & other types of geeks that probably do fairly well for themselves. There are obviously exceptions to this but I think it's probably a fair generalization. I think it's fair to assume that someone that's well off is more likely to contribute more than someone that isn't.
