Seriously, what the hell is going on? At this rate I'm going to be broke :(

Darksiders (I haven't actually played much of this, I got it because it was signed by the artist)
Mass Effect 2 (awesome)
Heavy Rain (good)
God of War 3 (good, but a little disappointing)
Final Fantasy XIII (crap)
Just Cause 2 (awesome)
Splinter Cell: Conviction (entertaining but ridiculously easy and penalises stealthy play, awful loading times)

Coming out soon:
Skate 3
Alan Wake
Red Dead Redemption
Alpha Protocol (will this suck, or will it be good?)

That's Q4 rather than imminent. Besides, I have no idea whether it'll run well on my aging iMac.

I didn't forget it, I just haven't given it much thought. I never played the first game and whilst I generally enjoy an RTS I never actively seek to buy them the day they're released.

Well since I purchased an Eve account, I'm looking forward to Tyrannis expansion coming out in nearly a week. I'll also pick up Redemption and Alan wake

How did Splinter Cell: Conviction penalise stealthy play?
2010-05-10, 7:44 AM #11
Because the game is much harder if you try to be stealthy. My second playthrough (on realistic) consisted of me making as much noise as possible and throwing grenades and mines everywhere, it took me less time and was considerably easier than my first playthrough (on normal).

I thought the stealth aspect was toned down from what I know of the previous games but I found running and gunning invariably ended in me taking serious damage and either dying or having to hide and play shadow games with the bad guys, which is what I suspect was the idea in the first place. And is actually what I found most fun about it. Although I do agree on it being easy and I haven't found as much replayability as I'd have liked, even with the Deniable Ops mode.
2010-05-10, 8:02 AM #13
I didn't mean that I didn't use shadows or hang from ledges, but there's almost no penalty for being spotted. It's not hard to hide again and the last known position mechanic gives you a ridiculous advantage, as does mark and execute. My first playthrough I was trying to avoid being spotted all the time and I found the game somewhat challenging, second time I gave up any notions of real stealth and it became ridiculously easy.

Mario Galaxy 2

End.
Think while it's still legal.

Yeah, it's pretty easy. Sneak up on one guy and break his neck. Then walk into a room of 4-5 guys, mark them all, and they're dead, no alarms set off or anything.

I've been buying so many I have a backlog... probably 100+ hours of games I haven't even played. Hell, I STILL haven't had time to play Serious Sam SE HD.

I'm personally hyped for Star Wars: The Old Republic (although I think that's 2011).

The only upcoming game I'm vaguely interested in is Deus Ex 3, even though thus far it seems like it's only out of obligation. Le sigh.

Please, don't be so insulting to blows to the groin. [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/garosaon/smiley/fgrtng.png]

As a standalone game it would have been pretty nice, but as this was not the case it was more like Highlander 2 to the franchise

It was kinda crap (I played it). Perhaps Aliens: Colonial Marines would do the franchise (the Alien franchines, at least) justice.

I would love an alien game where I'm a hopelessly out gunned/outnumbered marine in some place.
Instead of this silly gunfighting crap. I want it to be nearly impossible to kill the aliens, always using the environment or running.
2010-05-10, 2:19 PM #27
Minus the aliens in space, you just described Mirror's Edge, Tibby. Fighting is discouraged (although possible). You basically run the whole time.
2010-05-10, 2:29 PM #28
Yeah but Mirrors Edge doesn't have the fear of a gruesome death by something terrible.
Open areas, a simple objective, get it done or die.

A part of me is dying right now knowing I won't be able to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 since I got rid of my Wii...:(

I would consider falling to your death to be pretty gruesome. :suicide:

So, is it safe to assume that it goes something like:

Chaos Theory > Pandora > Splinter Cell > Conviction > Double Agent
Bassoon, n. A brazen instrument into which a fool blows out his brains.
2010-05-10, 2:42 PM #33
No, for all it's flaws I think Double Agent was a better Splinter Cell game than Conviction, it had a proper sense of espionage and stealthy bits. Chaos Theory is definitely the best though.

Why was the original Conviction cancelled? The one where you were on the run from the government and dressed like a hobo?

2010-05-10, 2:49 PM #35
It was something to do with the scale not matching the time they had to finish it in.

Personally, I enjoyed Conviction a lot. I don't even know what possessed me to give the demo a try because I didn't know anything about it and I've never been a fan of the series but I was absolutely hooked. It's definitely a departure for the series though and I think that's something that fans of "real" Splinter Cell games hold against it.
2010-05-10, 2:55 PM #36
A friend is loaning me his copy tonight. I'm really looking forward to it. The demo was fun. I like the new "pissed off" Sam Fisher.

Final Fantasy XIII: GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND. Oh I can "level up" now...**** I need more gil. GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND Well I got one weapon and one accessory upgraded. GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND.

Story's....decent. Gameplay...nah. It jumped the shark at around Ch. 11/12.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.
