BAM.

Facebook account deleted. Apart from if I accidentally log in any time in the next 14 days it will reactivate.

After all the digging around to find the BALEET button, you still have to prove to them you can go cold turkey before they'll actually (hopefully) delete your account. More likely, Zuckerbeeeerg will just sell my data to the Russians.

Actually the 14 day period is probably more to protect people who have their accounts hacked from being deleted.

Also, how has no one asked thus far why you're deleting it?

(1) I'm easily distracted
(2) It's getting harder and harder to filter out the crap
(3) The privacy issue is getting out of hand
(4) I want to read more books.

3. I don't think is much of an issue anymore

The rest I can't argue with :P

How is privacy not much of an issue ??? It's never been more of an issue, from what I read.

What?? How is that not an issue? They keep introducing more and more options and settings (An article I was reading today said that there is something like 150+ options and 70+ settings...), but I really feel like this is so overwhelming it only serves to confuse users, making the give up/make mistakes and present information they don't want to.

At this point no matter what facebook does they're going to piss people off. If they give more options for controlling privacy, they get accused of trying to confuse people out of their privacy.
If they simplify the privacy controls to make them easier for people to understand they'll just get accused of taking away privacy options.

Well, they keep on introducing new privacy features, and when they do, you typically have to turn them to a certain setting, because they will put the default on making all your info free to the grabbing.

more or less options, I dont care. just dont automatically make things available and have to make me change it to private every other day.
2010-05-14, 2:40 PM #14
Oh yeah, they're totally trying to push people to be more public with their facebooks.

Because the statement, "Public data is public," is both a tautology and a crappy 4chan meme.

Data that you share with every minor acquaintance you know is not private.

So obviously the option shouldn't exist. If people are too stupid to use something, that thing should not exist!

Seriously, it describes in detail, and when they changed the privacy system, it forced you to go over each detail with descriptions.

I always find it somewhat ironic that people with Facebook accounts are so :tinfoil: about privacy.

Facebook does *not* always force you to go over privacy settings when they add new ones. They might do so with a big release, because it's obvious something has changed, but they have added privacy settings (many times) without any notice whatsoever.

lol right?

I am not too concerned...the only thing I make sure I have constantly set up is no one being able to see my pictures unless I want them too.

If someone ones to try to steal my identity though, I would be flattered. they are welcome to my debt.

But other than that, the only thing I worry about is the wrong people seeing the wrong pictures. professionals these day view facebook as some kind of resume, frakking a.

I don't get what's confusing about privacy options. There's a few pages of settings and it's easy to control who sees what.

I dont think it ever deletes the account. Just disables it till next time you log in, I know because I did it.

Correct. They have done this before.

There should be options, I agree. But when you have over 250 different things you can set, scattered across 20+ pages of settings and menus, that is not a system designed for people to use. It's as system designed to discourage use.

Are we using the same Facebook? I see one area for Privacy, of which has a few categories with descriptions mentioning what they control.
2010-05-14, 4:11 PM #24
I am pretty certain happydud hasn't actually looked at the privacy settings in a long time and is just going on what other people said. There aren't that many options.

The only way it's "250 different things" is if you count all possible values for every dropdown menu...

That is how I'm counting it. It just seems like an absurd number of options. The bigger issue for me here though is the "you have to opt-out" mentality.

You don't have to opt out of everything. But that's semantical.

Also, counting each little "everyone, friends, friends of friends" as a separate option is asinine.

every depressive crash ive had in the past 4 years has been reading too much into a social situation on facebook related to some fickle bint.

I really should deactivate mine, but since i have not much of a social life in the real world now, i cant afford to burn more bridges
Code:
if(getThingFlags(source) & 0x8){
  do her}
elseif(getThingFlags(source) & 0x4){
  do other babe}
else{
  do a dude}

I find it helps to keep the number of "friends" on facebook to a minimum. The friends I have on my facebook are extremely limited, and generally only extend to people whom I talk to on a very regular basis or have some unique quality I would use their facebook for.

Right now I have a total of 10 friends on Facebook, and am not especially interested in increasing that number anytime soon.

I think Facebook needs to change up their friendship system. There should be a Friends, then Acquaintances section. Friends get more personal info like photos and such, while acquaintances only get some contact info like email and wall posting (obviously configurable as is now). I think most people would file most of their "Friends" under the new section.
2010-05-14, 6:44 PM #29
Um, you can do that, and I *do* that.

I have several different levels of privacy.

Mafia Wars (shame on me) - can't view anything, can't post.
Online friends - Can't view personal information, limited posting
Friends - can view anything, post/comment, etc.

Lists isn't really ideal for that. It requires too much micromanaging.
2010-05-14, 6:59 PM #31
True, you do have a good point though, I think facebook could benefit from an 'associate' versus 'friend' status.

But for me at least, I just pick one of three settings (which took a couple minutes to do to begin with) when I add a 'friend'.. not 'too much micromanaging' imo.

Because you complained that lists require too much micromanaging. I think what you articulated is spot on. I have forty some odd friends and many of those are because I have a personal policy to accept friend requests from people I know. I am considering cleansing some of them. If you friend me but don't care to ever send me a message I don't really see a point in keeping you as a friend.

I have my home number in my profile. I share photos with anyone, but I also don't post photos that I wouldn't want anyone to see. Honestly, though, I don't know what current privacy settings may have been altered. I'll check someday but since I don't post things I don't want people to see I'm not too worried.

The privacy things really aren't that hard to navigate. When they default it to everyone it's annoying, but really only when they add something without notice.

What bothered me of late was how all the bands/movies you had listed were to be replaced with links to those bands/movies, and that was to become public info. The opt-out choice was to let it be public info, or get rid of it all together.

I was thinking about deleting, but I think I'm going to try setting up groups first. It seems worth the effort to keep in touch with people living far off. I think people would be more comfortable with Facebook if they were a little more up front about their business model. I don't really mind non-personal information being collected about me, but instead of knowing how to make that happen via the complicating security measures, I should just be able to say "Only share impersonal information with advertisers."

I spent 5 minutes trying to set this up, realised both exactly what you were saying, and that if I were to try and set this up it would take nights and so promptly deleted my account.

Also, someone said you can't delete it, only suspend. This is not true. You have to dig to find the delete link but it is real.

The privacy thing for me was the straw that broke the camel's back really. It was the time-sink that was getting on my nerves. Think of it like putting the biscuit tin at the back of the cupboard ;)

Also Emon, is it not like 5:20am in Rochester? And ... Saturday? You're working too hard :P

The current problem is that anything you 'like', ie TV, Movies, other websites, basically anything these days thanks to open graph, gets the automatic ability to flood your activity stream with messages. Then you have to block these messages on a per-entity basis (ie you have to block The Simpsons, rather than blocking all TV shows or all entities).

I haven't been able to find an option that lets me put a blanket ban on these entities writing to my activity stream, so I had to go and delete all the things I liked (which you can only do one-by-one rather than in bulk so it took ages).

This is information I've had in my profile since joining Facebook in like 2005, I had it there because I like my friends knowing what I like, and now I've had to remove all of it.
