Bloody LOL. No wonder guys like Hitchens, Dawkins, Dennet and Harris (for all of whom I have the utmost respect) make so much money for giving these kind of people a voice.

I was feeling experimental enough to post a reply to some creationist who said the following:

@futurepsycdoc Please answer this question & don't beat around the bush.
The Universe as you agreed to had a beginning at one point. Space, Time & matter had a beginning & and compose the universe... In your scientific method, please explain to me how this came to be? Also what can create time?

We don't know. The entire point of the scientific method is being able to admit to not know everything. Religion just says, "Hey, we all ready have the answer! God made everything!" What sort of an educated mind would go along with a cop-out like that? Except the deist theory still holds a question of, "Well, who made God?" Religion (or religious devotion) - once the best answer we could come up with - to a modern man is but the desire to penalize themselves for critical thinking.

It was news to me that if someone directly replies to a comment that you've made from your YouTube account, you get automatically notified via e-mail. So six pages down the road, from a different internet scientist I get the following:

@DrKoobie ...You ask, who created God..God is spirit, can you create a spirit?
This statement is not contradicting to the law of cause & effect, no where in the
law does it say that a spirit requires a cause, just like ENERGY. its been said in science that energy cannot be created nor destroyed. So I ask you this, what created energy?

@futurepsycdoc ..But you also can't count a Diety out of it either.
Here is the issue, like you said before we may never know, but the evidence
clearly supports a Creator. You may not like it at all, thats your concern.
I have a question for you. given all the fossils in the fossil record, where are the fossils from man? how far can I go back? will I truely find monkeys in my family tree?

What sort of an educated mind tries to have a debate on youtube comments?

"Religion" (somehow this gives me the same impression of cartoon mad scientist saying "SCIENCE!") is for primarily helping understand how to live one's life (ethics), not to explain the mechanics of reality. Those that believe otherwise are misguided. The most well-intentioned debate will leave them confused and anything less is just shooting fish in a barrel.

"You say the universe comes from nothing, which is Impossible so you are wrong. God did it."
"So where did god come from?"
"He was always there!"
Mmm, Pie logic.

I gave up on reading YouTube comments ages ago because they really do destroy your hopes for humanity.
? :)
2010-05-26, 1:48 PM #10
I wonder if clinging to that sense of hope by avoiding seeing things like that is a bit of self-deception, though. I do like to feel that hope, so I tell myself that these comments are being made by an excessively vocal minority, and try to ignore them except when reading for laughs.

Also, I do realize that "lost hope for humanity" has become this offhanded saying which may not really warrant analyzing like this. I suppose for most of us, if we are to lose hope for something like the survival of mankind in the relatively long term, it still won't really affect our daily lives.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I would actually implore you to continue your debate because the value I derive from following it is akin to that of one of those Discovery Channel programs where a dude goes and does something exciting and dangerous to see what it's like -- i.e. I don't want to do it myself but since you're already doing it I'll root you on in the name of science! :P

The commenting system clearly hadn't been designed for what so many people use it in mind. Even from a technical standpoint, trying to reply to someone is a rather frustrating exercise. Google gets it! :D

Doesn't really look like you went into into it trying to debate anything.

I read several words before I realized that Koobie's replies were not more intelligent than any other.

And I was all ready to believe YouTube was redeemable. Double bonus bad grammar humor : My use of 'all ready' is correct.
