Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Kind of felt like a poor man's Pirates of the Caribbean to be honest. I would give it a 6.4/10.

It's fun overall, better than Clash of the Titans thankfully. The parkour scenes are great although I wish there were more of them (still doesn't hold a candle to Casino Royale's though). Additionally, the frequent camera cuts and shaky cam kind of make the action scenes a bit hard to follow (what is it with Gemma Arterson movies having this kind of filmed action?). Jake does well as The Prince (Dastan), his character's personality is very reminiscent of the games. The same goes for Gemma's Tamina, which is very much based off of Farah.

Now where should I begin with the issues. Most of the dialogue is not too bad per say, but the movie is a bit rather predictable and cliched at times. Character deaths can easily be seen coming. I also attribute this to a lack of suspense and tension throughout the movie as well. Chemistry between Jake and Gemma wasn't really there. While I do like Jake as The Prince and his British accent was performed well, somehow he wasn't able to pull me in that much. I can kind of say the same for Gemma lacking charisma compared to her counterpart Keira Knightley in Pirates; she's kind of just there.

Story wasn't bad though it felt contrived. However, I do think the dagger could have been employed better.

Tus's life could have been quickly saved with the dagger after he was stabbed by Nizam. I thought it was a bit too contrived with each brother dying after they come to a realization that Dastan wasn't his father's murderer. The ending would have also benefited greatly if it followed the game. I would have liked to see Dastan kissed Tamina and then rewind back time. Additionally, this would have been a good closing narrative as oppose to the half-assed writing at the end.

"Most people think time is like a river, that flows swift and sure in one direction. But I have seen the face of time, and I can tell you, they are wrong. Time is an ocean in a storm. You may wonder who I really am, and why I say this. Come, and I will tell you a tale like none you have ever heard."

I'm not sure how I feel about the "tax joke," is this going to become the "rum joke" for the franchise? Anyhow I personally had more fun playing The Forgotten Sands although that game was lackluster compared to the rest of The Sands of Time games as well (like a 7.5/10).

Nevertheless, this movie shows promise for future video game movies. I think a sequel will stand a chance of being much better than this one with the actors being more settled in their roles.

I'm a HUGE Prince of Persia Fan, i've played the last 4 games (not including the recently new one).

I thought it was pretty good to the source material of POP:SOT. I liked it. It won't be winning any oscars anytime soon, and I felt like the story could have been better, and I agree about some of the action scenes being cut too fast.

It felt like a 4 star movie that didn't make it to the 4th star because of a few issues, so I give it a 3/5 star rating. I would definately recommend it to the Pirates of the Carribean loving crowd.

Saw it last night. I think I have to agree with the 4/10. It was very reminiscent of PotC, but I think the fight scenes were a little too fast. In PotC you get to enjoy the fight, not get nausous from having the camera shaking and moving all over the set. I think if they calmed down in some of the fight scenes it would have been better.

The last fight with the black guy and the hassassen was really great.

Overall its a fun movie, and I hope its sequals are better then the PotC sequals.

Overall, I think Prince of Persia can be looked upon as a turning point for most video game movies. The movie is faithful of the source, but it still provide something original as oppose to the Resident Evil movies, which retain nothing of the Resident Evil atmosphere. Most importantly, Prince of Persia isn't abysmal and it reflects the idea that video games based movies have potential.

As for the poorly filmed action sequences, I blame Gemma Arterson for distracting the editor (much like Quantum of Solace and Clash of the Titans' shaky action sequences).

Was the game super popular? And if this flopped so bad, how do you think Tron will do?

The sands of time trilogy was very successful, critically and money-wise, although they seem to get a little bit worse with each one (the 3rd in the trilogy an exception). They were pretty popular, but not quite mario/zelda/halo popular.

Anyway, I think Tron will do well.
Tron is a Sequal to an old sci-fi movie that has a popular/cult status. I think general curiosity, good graphics, the fact that it's from disney, and a lack of Jerry Bruckheimer/quick camera cuts/ possibly word of mouth will ensure that Tron will do well, but that's my guesstimate.

Yeah I know this one other movie not too long ago that opened pretty modestly and everyone was all "omg it's a total flop".... It turned out to make 750 million in the US alone.

Opening weekend isn't what it used to be. Then again Prince of Persia probably won't have the kind of word of mouth that Avatar did. It's also probably not as good.
