Kind of felt like a poor man's Pirates of the Caribbean to be honest. I would give it a 6.4/10.
It's fun overall, better than Clash of the Titans thankfully. The parkour scenes are great although I wish there were more of them (still doesn't hold a candle to Casino Royale's though). Additionally, the frequent camera cuts and shaky cam kind of make the action scenes a bit hard to follow (what is it with Gemma Arterson movies having this kind of filmed action?). Jake does well as The Prince (Dastan), his character's personality is very reminiscent of the games. The same goes for Gemma's Tamina, which is very much based off of Farah.
Now where should I begin with the issues. Most of the dialogue is not too bad per say, but the movie is a bit rather predictable and cliched at times. Character deaths can easily be seen coming. I also attribute this to a lack of suspense and tension throughout the movie as well. Chemistry between Jake and Gemma wasn't really there. While I do like Jake as The Prince and his British accent was performed well, somehow he wasn't able to pull me in that much. I can kind of say the same for Gemma lacking charisma compared to her counterpart Keira Knightley in Pirates; she's kind of just there.
Story wasn't bad though it felt contrived. However, I do think the dagger could have been employed better.
Tus's life could have been quickly saved with the dagger after he was stabbed by Nizam. I thought it was a bit too contrived with each brother dying after they come to a realization that Dastan wasn't his father's murderer. The ending would have also benefited greatly if it followed the game. I would have liked to see Dastan kissed Tamina and then rewind back time. Additionally, this would have been a good closing narrative as oppose to the half-assed writing at the end.
"Most people think time is like a river, that flows swift and sure in one direction. But I have seen the face of time, and I can tell you, they are wrong. Time is an ocean in a storm. You may wonder who I really am, and why I say this. Come, and I will tell you a tale like none you have ever heard."
I'm not sure how I feel about the "tax joke," is this going to become the "rum joke" for the franchise? Anyhow I personally had more fun playing The Forgotten Sands although that game was lackluster compared to the rest of The Sands of Time games as well (like a 7.5/10).
Nevertheless, this movie shows promise for future video game movies. I think a sequel will stand a chance of being much better than this one with the actors being more settled in their roles.
