Chrome and file association?
2010-05-29, 12:54 AM #1
Giving chrome a whirl, and I am really impressed thus far.

One question though, how do I change the file associations within the browser. For example, every time I open a video file it opens in the quicktime player plugin (blech) and I would prefer it pop up windows media like it does with firefox. I don't really like the in-browser media player plug-ins either. I'd much rather it just open the player up with the file loaded and playing.

Any ideas?

You could go to the plugins page (put about:plugins in the address bar) and disable Quicktime.

As for the built in video, I don't think there's a way, but you can always right click and hit Save As.

Ok, thanks CM. I'll try disabling the plug-in and see if that helps. Any good addons you'd reccomend? I've already got speed dial, adblocker, and last pass.

Hmm, unfortunatly that didn't solve my problem. Now it just brings up the download window to save the file. Might work on some video stuff I care about, but other stuff I'd rather just play (ex. pr0n :awesome:)

I'd unrecommend speed dial, I hear it causes nothing but problems and is really, really slow compared to the default.

Get One Number if you use Google Reader/GMail. MZZT made it :P

Make sure you have "Adblock", not AdThwart. Adblock is much faster and easier.

Get the RSS Subscription extension, which lets you sign up to RSS feeds like you would in Firefox (click the orange RSS icon in the URL bar).

Also, Google Quick Scroll is pretty neat. When you do a google search and go to a page, you'll get a small black popup in the corner that, when you click on it, will take you to the place Google found your search terms on the website.

There's an option when you download to open it automatically. I believe it then uses whatever default program for that file is in Windows.

You have to try the "Chrome Sounds" addon at least once. :awesome: Then turn it off forever. But don't delete it.

You'll want IE Tab too. Though it likes to open a new window whenever it updates (which will be at a random time). :( Pendule is like Web Developer Toolbar. Speed Tracer looks like a nifty tool for development (I need to remember to install it at work). There are also versions of Stylish and Greasemonkey (search for "Tampermonkey" for this one) if you have scripts in Firefox you like to use.

Not sure why the plugin isn't working. Look for it in about:plugins, reinstall it if it isn't there? I don't use it so I don't even know if it's compatible with Chrome... wouldn't surprise me if MS did something dumb like blocking non-Firefox browsers.

There is no open option, it automatically opens the "Save as" window.

Yeah that means Chrome couldn't find a plugin to handle the file type.

Could be the server specifically is not announcing the correct file type, so Chrome doesn't know what to do with it.

Possibly. It is doing it with everything though unfortunately. My latest example being torrents.

If you want Chrome to automatically open files of a specific file type, make sure you have "Ask where to save each file before downloading" off in Options first... then you can click the arrow next to a download item and "Always open files of this type".

Of course I just have uTorrent scan my download folder for new .torrent files, so I just gotta download 'em and uTorrent grabs them.

Get used to the lack of options, the devs are morally opposed to them. Starting to get sick of it as stuff that horribly kills usability doesn't get fixed with each new release.

edit-
message removed to avoid helping Aglar starting a crappy argument about browsers.

I'll recommend some extensions once I'm back on my own computer
You can't judge a book by it's file size
