For any of you car junkies, my Subaru Impreza (95) has a hole in the catalytic converter, hence being quite loud. Since it is a 95, my car no longer needs emissions tests so I'm well aware that I can kind of do a amateur job to fix it. Is there anything that basic level I could do to fix it, or will I need to find someone that can do metalwork and do some welding to fix it (or just take it out altogether)? I know most mechanic shops won't do it since it's illegal to remove the catalytic converter.

my muffler broke right at the Cat, so we just strapped down both ends and tightened it together

(what model '95? I've got the LX '95 impreza)

Nothing about a 2007 Camry should be going wrong, specifically not the transmission. How many miles are on the OD?

The only experience I have had with transmissions going out were in 20+ year old vehicles, and usually, it will shift late and jerk you, or just wont shift at all until you cross the threshold again.

My wife bought a 2002 honda accord new and the transmission dumped all its fluid in our driveway one night (had ~40k miles on it at the time it happened). It's a common enough problem that consumer reports had that year (and a few prior) v6 accords transmission score rated really low.

I also have Impreza LX 2.2L 4-door. I love it, the thing is super fast!

For the record, my dad found some guys at work who will just straight up replace the cat for us for pretty cheap, so we are gonna go that route.

You should have seen my Cavalier before I had the exhaust redone.

The muffler had a hole in it the size of my fist. It was patched with a piece of sheet metal bent into place and stuck on with exhaust cement. The hanger for the muffler broke so we used some plumber's strap to hold it up. The hanger near the cat broke so we used plumber's strap and bailing wire to hold it up. It had rubber hose over the top (not on the pipe but the ceiling above it, the heat shield) that the bailing wire ran through because metal on metal would squeak. The cat, which normally bolts on, was taken from a different car, so there were THREE pipe adapters on each side to gradually increase the size of the pipe until it fit. There were four rusted-through pipe clamps on each side of the cat that held it together. I'm pretty sure there was more bailing wire somewhere between the cat and the muffler to hold THAT in place.

When I took it in to get it redone, I told them they could probably reuse the cat because it was still good. The cat itself was but there was no way to mount it outside of tricky welding. They quoted me without the price of a new cat, then when they replaced it they paid for the cat to honor the quote. It was like a $200 value.
