Italian Researchers have apparently reversed cases of blindness (caused by exposure to toxic chemicals) through transplants of the individuals' own stem cells. :awesomelon:

HOW MANY BABIES DIED TO GIVE YOU YOUR SIGHT? JESUS WOULD WEEP FOR YOU

That's pretty cool, though. I know I'd be pretty bummed if I lost my sight.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Looks like JM could use some stem cell transplants.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I've been eating a lot of organic stem cell yogurt lately. You'd be surprised at how much better it tastes when they're raised on a chemical-free grass-fed diet.
? :)

I wonder if and when we'll see e-mails saying stem cells will enlarge your penis.

Or am I the only one not getting that specific e-mail?

LOS ANGELES – Dozens of people who were blinded or otherwise suffered severe eye damage when they were splashed with caustic chemicals had their sight restored with transplants of their own stem cells — a stunning success for the burgeoning cell-therapy field, Italian researchers reported Wednesday.

Adult stem cells, which are found around the body, are different from embryonic stem cells, which come from human embryos and have stirred ethical concerns because removing the cells requires destroying the embryos.

They don't have to kill anyone for adult stem cells.

Fix your eyesight with a top-up every decade?
That's awesome.

That's science 101. You don't say "CURED FOREVA" even if you're 99% sure they are, you say "cured for now" and keep testing.

To be fair, he only posted that due to Captain Oblivious above.

If you're referring to Tony above, yes, I would assume he was being both sarcastic and oblivious at the same time.

If you accept he's being sarcastic then what makes you think he's oblivious?
He just used the typical response, y'know, sarcastically.... Someone said stem cells? OMG BABY KILLERS. The fact that there were adult stem cells has nothing to do with it.

How I interpret it. He didn't read the article; he was oblivious and believed 'stem cells' == 'from a fetus'. He doesn't think anything is wrong with that, so he made a sarcastic response about killing babies. That's how I interpreted it the first time I replied, and it's how I still do. In short : Wookie is correct.
2010-06-25, 6:19 AM #22
Of course the reality doesn't matter, only your interpretation of it.

Do they make adult stem cell yogurt also? I prefer organic but I'm OK w/ pesticides if the taste is worth it.

On the topic of stupid food choices, I looked into the paranoia surrounding artificial sweeteners the other day. I came to the conclusion that there is absolutely no credible evidence that they cause cancer or any other problems. Not even the aspartame breaking down into formaldehyde is a problem. And that old study from the 70s that "proved" sodium saccharin causes cancer? Nope, only if given in high doses, every day, from birth, will it form bladder cancer in mice.

Sigh.

I see it differently. Not that any of this matters, mind you, but if I say, "hey, look at this advance using adult stem cells" then "OMG BABIES DIED" just isn't very funny. If it just said stem cells then the comment could be considered both sarcastic and callous I suppose.

I used to avoid artificial sweeteners because of the nasty aftertaste but they've greatly improved over the years. They've also been great for diabetics. However, I personally still prefer the taste of real sugar. There's just nothing like the real thing.

I agree completely. There are a FEW things where artificial sweeteners are good. I've had good cheesecake made entirely with Splenda (sucralose) and been unable to tell. Which is a surprise because I really don't like the stuff.

If only it weren't for the fact that Aspartame has been linked to various diseases including Cancer...
2010-06-25, 12:44 PM #29
Hah yeah, good thing that's all a bunch of crap!

It usually goes something like this:

1. Someone publishes an article saying that XX chemical, under some certain circumstances, might have a link to cancer and that it warrants further investigation.
2. Media hears about it says, "OMG XX CAUSES CANCER!!"

According to the media everything causes cancer. I'm certainly no scientist but the media seems to get just about everything wrong when it comes to science (this is partially the fault of the scientific community for weak public relations). They also tend to give idiots like Jenny McCarthy an outlet for spreading fear & misinformation on matters that are actually dangerous if misunderstood (e.g: vaccinations). I won't even get in to how they've categorically failed to enlighten the public on climate science.

Exactly. That was my point. EVERYTHING we do pretty much causes cancer apparently, or has been "linked" to it in some small way. Whether we diet, don't diet, eat sugar refined foods, eat aspartame littered foods, eat high fat diets or low fat diets, we always seem to be in danger of developing cancer from any one of our daily activities. That's why I never understood why people ***** about "Oh you shouldn't do this.. it causes XXXX".... FFS you're going to die anyways eventually. Not to stir up a MJ debate at all, but it's one of the prime examples I hate when people are like "Don't smoke that it causes cancer".

Hell I wouldn't be surprised at all if one day the MSM reported that simply going outside will contribute to your chances of getting a cancer of some sort.

For the record:
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/risk/aspartame#q2

Quote:
in a comparison of people who drank aspartame-containing beverages with those who did not, increasing levels of consumption were not associated with an increased risk of lymphomas, leukemias, or brain cancers in men or women.[/i]
