Upgraded to 7, no sound
2010-06-23, 3:54 PM #1
I upgraded my old Dell Dimension 8400 from XP to Windows 7 today. Everything works great, except I didn't have sound when everything started up. It said the drivers were missing, so I went and downloaded the ones that Vista uses for my model of computer. Then it says everything is okay, so I go to play some music and nothing comes out at all. It even shows the decibel jumps if I hover over the taskbar volume thing, but there is no sound coming out of my speakers. I've googled and searched and can't find an answer for this so I was wondering if anyone here could help me find out what the deal is?

Go into sound properties and make sure it's using your speaker output, and make sure it's using the right ports.

Everything seems to be fine in there...

W7 has got some weird sound settings, from what I can tell it's due to digital rights bull**** as an anti-piracy measure.

If you open the Sound Control Panel, the speakers have the green check mark and under Properties it's enabled, etc?

The new audio stack in 7 supports some DRM, yes, but it's hardly the only reason for the change. It's also much more powerful, more effectively supports multiple devices (like when I plug in my USB headset, it routes sound to it automatically), supports per-device and per-application volume and sound processing, etc etc.

Yes, was listening to music on iTunes on XP as 7 was installing, up until 7 turned off the computer to do the rest of the install. Nothing physical has changed. Speakers have the green light next to the volume knob still and everything.

Right click on the sound button in the taskbar, output devices.
Make sure whatever output you are using is set to default in this screen.

Make sure it's plugged in and turned on. If your speakers have input options make sure they're set right.

Like I said, nothing has physically changed from when sound worked on XP a little over 4 hours ago.

Try unplugging the cable from the jack and plugging it back in. Often times there's a switch in the jack and the OS can detect that. However if you had bars on the dB meter in software that shouldn't be the problem.

Only other thing I can think of is that the drivers don't work. Try a different or older version maybe.

I've already done that and it didn't help. After endless google searches the drivers seem to be the problem. This old computer is still really quick (upgraded) and it seems that no one supports it's hardware anymore. To be specific, just try googling Soundmax Integrated Audio Drivers windows 7. You get a whole bunch of people trying just like me to find a fix for this. Except there is no such thing as a driver that meets those specifications. The closest I could find was a beta Vista driver, and I'm going to try that next.

If that doesn't work I'll be trying this guy's fix: http://www.bondysblog.co.uk/geek/windows-7-drivers-for-soundmax-adi-198x-fix/

Uhh....Well...I uninstalled every device with a yellow flag in Device Manager that was related to the sound card, rebooted, and Windows asked if I wanted for it to update my drivers for me. I said yes, then it said "Sorry, but you turned that option off." So I turned it on, and then youtube just started playing?? I mean hallelujah it's working. Thanks for the help though

Yeah, see, my suggestion would have been to fire up Windows Update and let it find drivers. Seems I came a little late to the party.

Well, in other words, Windows 7 is pretty cool. It runs quicker than XP did...somehow

Much better multicore and ram management.

I love that in windows 7 volume you can click mixer and turn off individual sounds. Like turning chrome's sound off, or turn a games volume up without it turning the system sounds up (incidentally I had system sounds muted immediately upon finding that setting, easier then disabling each sound one by one like I did on xp)
You can't judge a book by it's file size

I like it alot too.

windows 7 is evil for sound cards i've found, some older Creative stuff doesn't work, however, vinny once showed me called The kX Project. It works, its awesome, I'm happy
