I have been wanting to get something for a long while now. Today has set it in my mind that I am going to go for it.

In short it goes "Vroom Vroom" and has two wheels.

LOL... yeah... I guess two wheel and vroom vroom does cover a bunch of things.

A motorcycle. No moped, no segway, no vespa or spree. As for crotch rocket, cruiser, chopper, or Harley... I am going with whatever best offer I can find.

I'll get a cheap one, upgrade it to a better bike later if I like it...

or if I survive the first one, lol.

What kind of bike? Have you ridden before? Do you have any experience? How tall are you? Are you fat? Are you prone to doing stupid things (eg: anything over 100mph)?

These are all things you need to consider when purchasing your first motorcycle. I'll be glad to offer recommendations, once you provide the needed information.

Oh... I've thought about it seriously for several years now, so the questions aren't anything new. Just a matter of when not if. And to answer your assault of questions:

ike yet, not a full size, hardly any, average 5'7", no, stupid-yes, driving fast-no.

Let me just suggest NOT getting a Harley or any kind of chopper for your first bike. Choppers are very uncomfortable and hard to ride, and Harleys are very expensive (as are choppers). You will probably drop your first bike and you don't want that to be a very expensive one. Start out on something with a smaller engine (600-800cc for a cruiser, 250-500ish for a sport bike) for a year or so. You'll get a feel for how to ride properly without using the engine to make up for your lack of skill and you'll also be happy when you lay down your $2000 bike instead of your $8-20k bike. Also, a naked sport bike might be a good option too, those plastics get expensive when you drop it.

The most important thing is: WEAR PROTECTION. Don't be one of those retards that rides in sandals and sunglasses. You WILL have people almost kill you on a weekly basis and your only protection is your awareness/reflexes and what you're wearing.

Crimson is right on the money. If your experience is limited, I recommend going on craiglist and buying a cheap bike, as you are going to lay it down. You can find lots of old bikes from the late 80s that still run like champs. Great for learning, cheap up front, and as long as you don't hurt it too much, you can sell it for a fair amount when you're ready to graduate to something better. If you want something a bit newer, a Honda Rebel 250 is a good place to start, or a Honda Nighthawk. A Ninja 250/500 would also be good. A Suzuki GS500 or Buell Blast would also be good starts. All can be had for under $1500 if you're willing to get something a little bit older (2004 and older, not at all bad).

I really recommend you go to a local dealership and just sit on the bikes and see which ones you fit on. You want to be able to firmly plant both feet on the ground while holding it up. Also, see how far you can safely lean it. Try not to get a heavy bike, and you will likely have to pick it up by yourself in the middle of an intersection at some point.

Good point, I forgot about the weight. There are techniques that allow you to pick up a very heavy bike by yourself but they require practice. Let's be honest, who's going to practice that by setting their bike on it's side and lifting it up again?

Me, for one. lol... yes, I have thought about that.

I thank you guys for the support/advice. Steven pretty much said most of the plan I had laid out already. My family, as well as a number of people I know, are diehard riders. So I get some knowledge from them. I was going to go the craigslist route, with the help of the forementioned 'people in know' so I don't get screwed in a deal. However, that was only after I check with [those people] to see if they, or someone they knew, were selling, getting rid of, or willing to help out someone like me.

Get a Yamaha TW200

It's small, wussy, cheap, and gets over 60mpg on average. It also has enough low end torque to climb a tree.

That's one of the many reasons behind me going to get one, better gas milage. For my first one though I am really not wanting one that goes rediculously fast. I mentioned in a reply to Steven that I don't drive fast. There are too many dicks out there. The fastest I drive is typically 80-85 on the main highway where I live. Which is pretty conservative since the speed limit is 75, and it's Michigan so half the people are driving 90-100 mph on there normally on any given day.

would you be comfortable with more like a cruiser bike? I did. I have a 2008 Yamaha Vstar 650 which is comparable to a Honda Shadow. I love it. They are half the price of a Harley and I think they are more stable and balanced than a little scooter at a higher speeds. And you actually stand out more with a bigger bike, but it all depends on what your size is and your personal preferences between crotch rockets or cruisers. And Steven is absolutley correct about proper protection. The popular uniform here where I live in the Summer time is the so-called protective shorts, flip-flops, sometimes no shirt and no helmet gear. I am always doing this in response (:ninja:) when I see this. Thick denim Pants, jacket, Boots, and a hemet may be uncomfortable in a hot summer, but alot less painful than road rash.
