Power Supply
2010-07-11, 11:36 AM #1
So last march my old power supply in my old computer died so I think it's time to get a replacement.

Here's what I've figured I need in my new power supply:
  • 20+4pin connector
  • 4 peripheral connectors
  • 1 floppy connector (optional, not too sad if I can't get it)

My power supply that died was like 300 or 350 and my dad said he didn't think that was powerful enough. I looked for my gfx card specs and I can't find a wattage recommendation for it, but I found a very similar card, same chipset and card maker but it uses PCI-E instead of AGP and it's newer. For that it's recommended 350W minimum.

I used newegg's wattage calculator and erred on the side of "more" (they don't even have the cpu in the list, it's too old!). They recommend 388 or more.

With this info I have been looking at newegg power supplies and I need a second opinion.

First choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104953
Second choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139008

Newegg's list of power supplies: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=58&name=Power-Supplies

And lastly, my hardware:
  • AMD K7 II (Athlon XP) 1.8ghz single core 32-bit
  • GeForce 6800GS
  • Floppy drive
  • DVD-RW drive
  • DVD-ROM drive
  • 500gb hard drive (IDE)
  • 1.5gb memory (one 512 stick, 1 1gb stick.)
  • Etc (tv tuner, modem, 2 case fans)

I'm basically looking for confirmations or suggestions on a power supply that would be better. I'd like to place my order today if possible, I need a hew headset because I broke mine. :(

They're both fine. It's just a power supply. Get the cheaper FSP model.

the corsair is cheaper after rebate and the shipping is free with that promo code

you'll pay 80 cents more up front (since the shipping on the "cheaper" one is $9.20) but you'll get $20 back sometime within the next year

I got a Mushkin 500w PSU a year or so ago, and it totally rocks.

Oops, I didn't see the after rebate price. Get the Corsair then.

It doesn't really matter, so long as it isn't obvious crap and can provide what you need.

I would get a 700w, but that'd be overkill unless you're gonna run dual vid cards probably.

Yeah?

Well I'd get a 1000w psu. With big ****ing fans that have LED lights on them and little biohazard symbols.

And I'd also cut a big hole in the side of my computer case and replace it with plexiglass. With a a giant biohazard symbol etched on the side. And I'd put neon colored LEDs all over the inside. I mean, because really. You need to see the inside of my rig to know I'm so cool.

^^ Someone didn't get their coffee...

I had a 450w with a very similar setup and it ran fine. Just FYI.

Package shipped from California last night, but it's already in Philly! :D

(I live in NJ BTW, so maybe it'll come tomorrow... it's scheduled for Thursday though).

I have a plastic window on the side of my PC with blue LED fans inside :(

But at least no biohazard symbols.
