Spartacus Blood and Sand

Anyone watched this? It's available on Netflix watch instantly or I suppose you may have watched it on Starz. Anyway, I finished watching season 1 a couple of weeks ago and I realized I haven't enjoyed any movie since. My son wanted to watch another gladiator movie (one where I didn't have to cover his eyes every few seconds) so I rented Gladiator on blu-ray. It was ... so lame. I remember the movie being extra violent and awesome but it seemed so tame. And really, there were only 3 fights in the arena and one "war" at the beginning. There were a few splatters of blood here and there but really the fight sequences were short and not too exciting. I wonder if I watch Braveheart again I will feel the same way?

I semi-enjoyed X-men Origins: Wolverine because Wolverine is so awesome, but it still felt half-empty.

Have you ever enjoyed a movie or TV show so much that everything after it seemed empty?

I enjoyed that show as well. Didn't really make me lose any affection for Gladiator or Braveheart, though and I did similar to you and watched both of those after Spartacus as well. 300 too. Blood and Sand was sort of the hybrid child of 300 and Gladiator, I feel. I feel the same about Wolverine as well. Movie was a disappointment but had enough of the Wolverine I know and love to make me not hate it. As far as something I enjoyed so much everything else seems to pale later, I think that is sort of incremental. Occasionally something comes along that raises the bar in your mind. Other and older material just sort of leaves you wanting until that next thing comes along.

Hmmm, sometimes after watching Arrested Development I don't laugh at other shows as much...

Good to hear about Spartacus though, I was considering buying it, but I may just start up netflix (been meaning to do that anyway...)

I get that feeling when watching alot of TV/Movies that I loved as a kid.

For example a few years ago I bought 'The Greatest American Hero' DVD set, Rewatching it was soo painful. I am not sure if it is some sort of cultural trend- more blood/action/sex or there was just less stuff available competing for our attention span.

But I don't think my opinion of Gladiator will change.

Spartacus is kind of dumb fun... but it's pretty badass when it really gets down to the killing and ****.

What Antony said. It's fun to watch when you turn your brain off and don't take it too seriously. The dialogue, acting, and story are all pretty brutal but the show is more about the visuals and violence anyways.

For something that has much less action, but far more depth, see Rome.

Brian, did you see Rome? I think you would enjoy it. It's a wonderful mix of violence, politics, and sex.

Rome was good. Last time I looked in wikipedia, Spartacus supposedly is getting a second season but that's up in air due to the main actor having blood cancer. Apparently a prequel series is in the works.

I didn't see Rome. I just added it to my queue.

Re: 2nd season of Spartacus: yeah, the main dude had cancer but he is now supposedly cancer-free and on the mend. They delayed the "true" second season but already started a prequel (which is a lot shorter, I think they said 4 or 6 episodes).

I will also use this thread as an opportunity to mention that you should all watch Party Down. It's the most hilarious show you've never seen.

Watched it when it was on Starz, and aside from the rare crappy stab effect, I thought it was pretty good. Is season 2 supposed to be them just ripping up Capua?

This. Best show since AD got cancelled easily (and what do you know, Party Down suffers the same fate)

It seems like it's just me but really I thought the show was a lot deeper than just a fighting/gore/sexcapade. Putting the rest in spoiler tags because it discusses the actual details, in case you haven't seen it yet.

I liked all the substories, like how evil the broken-leg-guy was (forgot his name already) and I really, really liked the whole story surrounding Crixus. In fact, I think I liked that story better than the main one. Also liked Doctore, he was awesome. The final episode was ****ing awesome too. I think only one prior TV show made me feel that way, the last episode of Season 1 of Jeremiah.

Its kind of the same for me, having watched The Office 1-5... most tv shows seem lame and unfunny. Even arrested development lacks what the office gives me. Mind you, it might simply be because I watched Arrested Development 1-3 over 3 times each.

I've watched all three seasons of Arrested Development at least 30 times each. AT LEAST. I still find new stuff in it every time I watch that I never noticed. Bench / sign gags, phrases that can be taken almost 4-5 ways given the context of the episode, quick sight gags, and the almost limitless amounts of foreshadowing in the show. For instance, in early season 2 when the banana stand gets thrown into the ocean and they are taking it out, you can see written in graffiti on the side "I'll get you Bluths, Hello", which foreshadows the eventual season finale where you find out Annyong's name is Hello". So already a season and a half before the finale, they knew EXACTLY what they were doing

I watched the first episode of Arrested Development and didn't laugh even once. I didn't watch any after that. Ugh.

Never watched it but I'm kind of the same way with The Office. I caught a couple episodes back in May and I was pretty disappointed. I can see how some people might like it, though.

I don't blame you, the first episode really isn't that great. I'd say starting at 3 is when it hits true stride. You should take an hour of your day and watch at least the first couple episodes (and it really is only an hour).

And also Ford, I agreed with Party Down as well. Watched the first episode, wasn't too great, by episode 3 it was pretty much comedy gold and I stand by the claim that it's one of the funniest shows of the decade 00-10.

You people gotta give shows that are 60+ episodes some more time. I don't remember ANY show where the first episode was as good as it was in its prime. First episodes of Seinfeld sucked. First episode seasons of Simpsons weren't NEARLY as funny as it was mid stride. First episodes of Family Guy were pretty terrible. First 'sodes of Sopranos were pretty weak compared to midseason. I can go on and on. Community I thought was AWFUL the first episode, and then about 3 months later someone told me to watch it and now it's probably my favorite show currently on TV.

TL;dr, you guys just need to save an hour or two and watch more episodes than just 1. If I had judged books based on one chapter alone I would've missed out on some absolute classics.

Buck, not that this really makes a difference, but The Simpsons had a deliberate change of tone into full comedy between the first and second seasons.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
