Chamball
2010-07-14, 9:19 AM #1
I picked up this sport recently and it's freaking awesome. Simply put, Chamball is Dodgeball meets Martial Arts and Twenty Feet of Rope.

There are obviously a few gameplay differences since the ball is attached to a rope. You're allowed to block with your shins and forearms, but any other hit counts as a point. If you fall on your ass (anywhere thats not your shins or forearms) that is a point as well. If you go out of the circle, it's also a point. Don't hit yourself either, cause that counts as a point!

We also wear gloves when we play because there tends to be a lot of rope burn. The ball is a size 3 soccer ball so it stings a bit, but it's not so bad!

Anyway, I've attached some of my photos from the game! Come play!

Looks cool, but what are the rules... other than points? How does one win? Is there elimination? I may set this up in my back yard...

edit: I didn't click your links lol, doing that now.

We usually play with a time limit or a point limit depending on what the days like. No elimination, but theres a penalty 1 on 1 if you're doing a tournament.

What specifically counts as a point? A direct hit? A wrap around? Both?

This seems like it would be more fun with an elimination rule set in, maybe to 5 points and you're out. Assuming that points would be bad.

If the ball touches a target area (anything other than your forearms & shins) it's a point. Direct hits and wraps count as points. If you touch a target area on yourself it's a point for the other team.

However if someone punches or kicks the ball at you and it hits, thats 2 points. And it looks bad ass.

Ahh, I like the punch and kick aspect. Makes it worth the risk. Also, wasn't aware there were teams. Just two? Multiple?

You should post a complete rundown of how this game works lol.

Sorry :ninja:

We usually play 3v3 - More gets a bit crazy. Less is still doable, but it takes a lot more effort.

Here's my rundown, I'll add more if I forgot something:
Game Rules
  1. 2 teams start outside the circle. Ball is served for possession
  2. Posession belongs to whoever has a hold of the rig closest to the ball. (someone grabbing 2 feet down the rope would lose possession to someone who grabs the net)
  3. When in possession you can't travel. Only pivoting is allowed.
  4. No double holds - If you let go and it doesn't hit someone on the other team, only your teammate can pick it up.
  5. If this happens you can also kick it to a teammate.
  6. If you swing and let go of the rig, but the ball hits someone you can pick it up again.
  7. If you swing and miss but haven't let go, keep swinging! It's still your hold!

Blocking
  1. Block with anything from your feet to your knees and your fists to your elbows. (fist recommended so you dont bend your finger weird)
  2. Joints count as a block, so if it hits a little above your kneecap its a block.
  3. Don't block with your face. It sucks. Trust me. (also its a point!)

Points
  1. Point awarded for hit on target area, if a target area hits the ground, or if a player leaves the circle.
  2. A Punched or Kicked ball counts as 2 points if it hits a target.

Serving/Resets
  1. At the start of the game, players start outside the circle and the ref serves the ball up.
  2. At a point, the player who was hit with the ball takes it out of the circle. The other players stay in the circle. Step in to restart play.

Sounds a lot like blurnsball.

What do you secure the rope to?
2010-07-14, 10:32 AM #12
50lb weight. you can see it in the first image by his foot. we've also hooked to storm drains with a carabiner.

Is it rope, or bungee cord?

It's just a rope.

Looks like it could be fun, but it looks like there could also be safety problems with it too, more so than dodgeball. I'm also still confused about how one can hold the line in active play.

You can hold the line, but only for three seconds, if you're in possession. Otherwise you can't hold onto it, you can however stomp or tangle it I believe.

I'm hooked on this idea, I already plan to setup an arena (30ft and 7.5ft for penalties) in my back yard... Good times to be had.

Seems like the only hazards of the game are getting the rope around your neck, a ball to the face, or a kick in the shin.

You grab the rope anytime the ball is in play. If two people are holding onto the rope, the person closest to the ball gets possession and the other person lets go.

Safety wise, it's somewhere between rugby and kickboxing. :)

Play stops immediately if it starts to wrap around someone's neck. We're not playing Thunderdome rules here. Kicks in the shin don't really happen. Ballface, however, definitely does.

The worst I've gotten hurt while playing is a small rope burn on my leg, but yes finger injuries are probably likely.

Whats confusing about holding the line? If youre holding the rope (like in the attached image) you can swing all you want or even pass, which is what's going on in this image. The ball is pretty out in the open though, so someone on the other team could attempt to run in and grab it closer or at the net.

Ahhh stop posting pictures! lol I want to leave work and go setup the yard now. The hard part for me is getting everyone to come play. Stupid lazy friends, hippies and whatnot... *mumbles about building robot friends who clean his house*

Hmm... I guess I just foresaw players playing far rougher (even if you're not supposed to play rough).

I guess I was confused on this page:

Quote:
A Holding player is any player who is currently touching the Ball or Line with any part of their open hand.

Quote:
Players may touch the Line with any part of their body except their hands at any time during Active Play.

Does this mean they can grab onto the line but not, like, wrap it around their hands (but they can wrap it around their arm)...?

It's not in Active Play if someone is holding the ball because no one can get closer to the ball to gain posession. Active Play seems to mean it's on the ground or generally not being held by someone. Where as the line can determine who gains possession should two people grab it.

Sorry, that should read
Quote:
If a player is touching the line without holding the line, it's called Tangling

It's a little hard to explain, but basically you CAN touch the line without your hands.
A tangle would be when the rope was wrapped around your appendage or something, but you're not holding it with your palm. You're not holding it, but you can yank the rope to throw off whoever is holding it. You can't grab the rope and yank, because someone else has possession.

If someone is holding the ball and the rope is taught, you could wrap your foot against the rope and try to yank it away or change its momentum when it's in air.

Steven - Sounds confusing, but the rules fit pretty much within the flow of the game. Aim to hit someone and if they block keep going. If someone gets a hold of the ball better than you you let go, don't travel, and don't pull if the lines around someones ankle or neck!

we're going to try to get some more footage tomorrow that hopefully explains tangling better. Maybe even a slow game would help demonstrate the mechanics.

The rules arent as complex as they seem, in fact they're pretty seamless with the game.

KOP_AoEJedi - If you end up setting up, take pictures! I'm really excited you're so interested! The chamball guys are as well. They're reading this thread but being obnoxious lurkers :argh:

So if you get hit in the face and knocked on your ass, that's two points? Talk about adding insult to injury.

I'll see what I can do. I just moved into this place 2 weeks ago, and as much as I want to play this weekend, it's unlikely. My friends are hard to gather in one place too lol. Soon I hope though.

No no. It's 2 points if someone punches or kicks it and it hits you. If your face happens to be in the way, well thats your own fault! If you fall it's just one point.
