When did you last run defrag?

For me, it's been 8 months and my comp was 16% fragged.

It took 26 hours runing nonstop in safe mode before defrag.exe could fix it. My computer now runs like I have an extra 200 mhz that I didn't have before. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/cool.gif]

I would defrag my comp usually, but because I'm too lazy to let it run for over 24 hours, I haven't done it in a year.

Never.

I'm petrified of how long it will take to be honest.

I'm running a P4 2.4 GHz, 512 MB RAM with an 80 GB HDD (58.3 GB used). How long do you reckon that would take? Are there any real benefits? And are there any potential screwups?

I find if you keep defraging it tends to take a ton less time... the reason for it is there is less fragments files but everyone already knew that so I'll just say it. "Thanks for the Info!"

I do it every month or so, or when I have been moving/installing/uninstalling lots of stuff.

Gee_4ce, there isn't any downside to defragging, and it'll let your system run faster. Just start it and let it go overnight, that's what i usually do.

It "helps" Windows "find" files "easier". If a file isnt spread in peices all over a disk, its "suppose" to be "easier" to "find". "Supposedly". You be the judge.

Personally, though, I think the only disk action that could benifit Windows a good healthy cfdisk.....

Right, all your files are defragmented, all stored in local sectors on the HD... but is it really that noticable? X_x

I really can't imagine it being very noticable at all...

And I don't know why I should look up on google a question pertaining to a topic already at hand on a Discussion Forum. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

GBK, you make it sound like it's some Windows gimmick...The only reason it's not in Linux is because the filesystems just do not fragment.

Hm, so you'd rather wait for someone to explain it to you on that message board, even if it may take some time and be awfully polemic and biased/skewed

You try not to educate yourself?

I'm just saying. Honestly, I really don't care what the benifits are. It won't effect me one way or the other... I still have never defragmented, and probably still never will...

My point is that if everybody looked up everything on Google, what the hell would be the point of talking to other people at all? Why do you (whoever you are) feel the need to try and appear so above the simple act of conversation, and needlessly ramble on about a silly search engine that everybody knows is there. If I wanted to write a detailed essay on defragmentation, I'd have used Google. But geez... I'm just promoting discussion. Give it a break already.

Heh, yes it does make a difference. Whether you'll notice the difference or not depends on the extent of the fragmentation. The longer you leave it alone though, the worse it gets.

Yes, you will notice. On my old computer, I didn't run defrag for a long long time, and when I was trying to burn a cd to my computer it kept giving me errors. *Remember, this was when CD-R's first came out, so it was like a 2x/4x*

Anyways, after a defrag the problem went away *And the error message told me to run defrag*

So it does help...

In some ways it is. True, in rare cases it does improve performance slightly, but very rarely. And beyond that, the "xx% fragmented" percentages that Windows comes up with is bull****. Ive worked with systems that I knew were fragmented far worse than the "2% fragmented" that Windows reported....

Correction - If you've never done it before, you'd probably notice a big difference. I hadn't defragged mine in the year and 4 months I've had it, and I just defragged for the first time last week. It felt like I discovered an extra 200 MHz just laying around. Everything is noticably faster.
Instead of the start menu taking a second or two to pop up, it coems up instantly (like it should).
Now, it doesn't make a HUGE difference, but it makes a noticable one.

Now, if there was a power failure bad things would happen.. but just don't do it when a storm is coming. *shrug*
Chaz- I had the same problem, only it was stuck on 1%. But when I started it up again, it worked just fine. *shruggies*

I defrag each time the Disk Defragmenter in Windows XP recommends that I do so (click Analyze). I check to see if it's time to defrag about once a month, amongst various other things that I do to keep my system running smoothly. Most people tend to wait until there is a problem, but those of us who don't have money and time to waste, we take a more pro-active approach.
