Documents and Settings in windows 7

I tried to create this folder, and it said it was already there. So I went into Folder Options and made it viewable. Now I can see it in my C drive but it has a lock symbol on it, and I can't give myself full permission even though I am the computer administrator. I need to put some files in it, how can this be done?

[edit: I google and try different things for 15 minutes, finally post here, and figure it out 10 seconds later. It was under Advanced and I removed a "Deny everyone" permission. Carry on.]

[Although I am a little perplexed why it still has a shortcut arrow on it....]

Haven't cared enough to test this assumption, but I thought that Documents and Settings in Win 7 was just a placeholder redirecting to the "Users" folder for the sake of compatibility with old programs that expect it to be there. I might very well be wrong!
2010-07-16, 12:04 PM #3
That's a placeholder for compatibility. You aren't supposed to mess with it. Use the "Users" folder instead.

Also, for the record, being "computer administrator" does not and SHOULD NOT mean that you can just go around ****ing with anything you want. That's a disastrously bad security choice. In Windows Vista/7 (and to some extent, XP) system files are given ownership to other accounts, such as the system account, to reduce attack cross section should the user's account be compromised.

In the rare instance that you DO need access to something you don't own, you have to change ownership to your account first. The most common use for this is taking ownership of files from user accounts, like after an upgrade or if you are transferring old files from another drive.

I have a huge "My Music" folder tree broken down by artist and album that I copied over from my XP system. I have a master playlist that points to all these songs in that specific directory, so I just wanted to copy it to the same directory so I don't have to take the time to make a whole new playlist with hundreds of songs. It seems to be working fine, am I really messing things up?
2010-07-16, 1:32 PM #5
When you wrote it to documents and settings, windows probably shunted it off to users anyway.
2010-07-16, 4:58 PM #6
Why would you need to make new playlists? The paths shouldn't be absolute. If they are, whatever software you used to make the playlists is retarded. Try moving it somewhere else and see if it still works.

In Vista and up, "Documents and Settings" is renamed to "Users" and a shortcut placed in its place for badly coded legacy apps. You can't manipulate it directly, and you're not supposed to. Hence the "Deny everyone" permission.

The new location for Music is C:\Users\<UserName>\Music.

A poorly coded app would try C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\My Documents\My Music and would run into no less than three redirections: Documents and Settings to C:\Users, My Documents to C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents, and My Music to C:\Users\<UserName>\Music.

So unless your software is hard coded to use the old directory, chances are the playlists would work fine anywhere.

And it's not hard to do a simple Find/Replace on a playlist in Notepad to fix paths anyway. Takes like 30 seconds.

Notepad can do find and replace?

You're right, I dragged the music to the Users folder and it still works. I'm not sure how to put back the Deny Everything permission setting though, trying to do that now.

I think it was introduced with Windows XP - possibly Vista. Regardless, Notepad++ is superior.

This. Even made some registry edits so almost everything should point to N++ instead of Notepad

And PSPad is superior-or.

Notepad++ is a bloated pile of crap with a terrible UI. Instead, I use Notepad2, which uses the same editing component (Scintilla) but very lightweight and a great replacement for Notepad.exe. There's a good installer on a page linked off the main site that non-destructively replaces notepad.exe (doesn't overwrite it).

Granted, I only farted around in Notepad2 for 60 seconds, but I wasn't able to easily find a way to do tabs. It's not a terrible program (and, as a direct replacement of notepad.exe, it's definitely superior to its ancestor), but the fact that it doesn't seem to have tabs nixes it as being in any way superior to Notepad++.

No comments on PSPad, because I don't use a program whose site uses a British flag to identify its English site. :colbert:

Notepad2 doesn't have and isn't supposed to have tabs. I wish it did, but Notepad++ is annoying as hell. SciTE is another one that has a terrible UI.

Notepad++ might be 'bloated', but it also has some nice features I use all the time. What do you find so annoying about it?
2010-07-17, 2:46 PM #18
Even if it is bloated, how does that bloat get in your way? Seems to load up nice and fast just fine for me.

I don't make anything in notepad important enough to warrant downloading a better program.
I write my stories in Word. Temporary stuff goes into sticky notes or notepad, depending.

I'd honestly advocate putting your stories in Google Documents, if it's nothing of a sensitive nature (i.e., that putting your stories there wouldn't risk you getting fired). My ex would constantly complain about how she wanted to work on her college applications while she was over at my house, but they were left on her laptop at her apartment - and, every time, I would respond that she should keep them in Google Docs. She eventually adopted it and the complaints stopped.

Sorry, not the best word. More like, it has a bunch of annoying (and ugly looking) features and stupid conventions.

No wait, that's TextPad. Notepad++ is okay. I think I stopped using it because it was unstable for me.

I think he was trying to provide a deeper explanation of the "Documents and Settings -> Users" redirect.

It's a lot harder to accidentally leave your Google Docs in your pocket when you do the laundry. ;)

My keys live in my long leather coat (which my friends have dubbed: the matrix jacket). If I'm not wearing my coat the keys go straight into the coat pocket as soon as I get home. I have lived my entire life without accidentally putting anything in the laundry except for one time... and that was because someone else had put my bank card in my pants pocket instead of my wallet ><

You can do this from any folder, iirc.
