I have nothing against ATI, but between a TNT2, Geforce 4 MX 420, and Geforce 6600 GT I have about 16 years of flawless nvidia performance.

Here I am, with the opposite in ATi.

I refuse to believe the GF4 MX card served you well. That was one of the worst series of cards Nvidia ever released, only beaten by the GF5 series.

I've used both ATI and Nvidia. ATI's drivers are much more pleasant to use.

I happily played Q3 based games on it for years and It's still upstairs on our old computer plugging away. Probably completely buried in dust too, I haven't opened that box for years and it sits on the carpet turned on pretty much 24/7. Obviously was never meant to be a top performer, but it's very good at doing exactly what it was designed to do.

The GF4 MX was fine. The problem was that it was marketed as being a GeForce 4 which implied that it was better than the GeForce 3, which it really wasn't.

I bought a power supply for my old computer to replace the one that was dying (my best theory is it was outputting less power as it warmed up, causing my video card to power down after a few minutes from lack of power).

Also got a new headset to replace the one I tripped over the cord of, which ripped the cord. I'm keeping the twist tie thingies on the cord of this one to keep it from the same fate.

Also got a Midnight Blue Nintendo DSi XL. No I can't wait for the 3DS (which I will get too) I had a DS Phat and I was LONG overdue for an upgrade and couldn't wait any longer.

I'm having fun taking my brother's picture with it. He must think it steals your soul or something since he hates me taking his picture. Unfortunately it has this thing where it always plays the shutter sound at maximum volume through the speaker regardless of whether headphones are plugged in or the volume settings. Lame. I thought that was just an EU law or something. Oh well I still have my mutable digital camera I suppose.

It would have been fine even if it were on the same level as the GF3. The problem was, it lacked DX8 support and HW T&L support, which nearly every game out at the time required. The Geforce3 did.

The GF4 MX was nothing more than a rebadged, slightly overclocked GF2 series card.

I would've said that till I bought my dual XFX 5770s... I can't install any Catalyst newer than 9.2 on Windows 7 64bit. The installation goes fine, but upon a reboot the machine gets to the splash screen and begins to initialize USB devices. My keyboard backlight flashes on, off, then solid on, and the animated logo freezes. At that point the machine will not respond to any commands. The keyboard doesn't recognize button presses (caps and num lock do not work). I have to force the machine to shutdown and either manually remove the drivers in safemode or use system restore to get back to a working driver.

It's been maddening.

That didn't mean a damn thing for the OEM markets it was meant for. The naming was a marketing disaster however.

I would try an ATi, but I too, have had nothing but good luck with nVidia cards. TNT, GF3, 4600, 7900 GT, and currently a 9600 GSO 768mb. I just need a quad-core computer now. :smith:

I disagree. All brands are going to have failures, so it's mostly just luck of the draw if your card is going to fail no matter which brand you buy.

I realize i'm being a bit contradictory because I say I buy nvidia because I've always had luck with them. Which is true, I wont deny that that's why I stick with them. But deep down I know that I'm probably just as likely to have a failure with either brand.

yeah in reality it was a GF2 with a couple GF4 features

a GF2.5 if you will

awesome with Q3 and UE1 games not so much with anything from after 2001/2002

had one in the POC600 and managed to run UT2K3/2K4 at playable framerates without setting the graphics to "****ugly"

How much was that 460?
I like my 5770, good for the price (160$ on sale) but it's time for an upgrade. Thinking of maybe going crossfire.

Are they still[/i] making dual slot cards with giant fans like that? I thought they would have engineered past that by now.

Judging from the pics, I would say that most of them could do without the dual slotness since it doesn't appear to be anything other than a thin strip of metal not really doing anything.

Huh? There are fans and bigass heatsinks taking up all that space. They need both slots. Until they lower the TDP of high end video cards, they're going to continue needing that space.

On a side note, 5870s are massive behemoths. I wish I had gotten a slightly larger case for mine because there's very little clearance between it and the drive bays in an Antec 300.

I'm talking about the metal piece on the rear. Not that it's an issue for a REAL case, but it's totally unnecessary as it DOES NOTHING. If I replaced my heat sink with something newer and smaller I could fit a dual slot card, except for that piece on the end.

That really wouldn't be a good idea anyway... Heat dissipation is dependant on surface area, and sticking a heatsink with much smaller surface area on a card designed to be cooled by a larger heatsink is pretty much asking for trouble.

And anyway, in a lot of cases that "wasted space" on those brackets is usually taken up by extra video outputs.
