Post pictures of projects you're working on/have worked on.

Since I got hit and had to slide the bike, I've been more willing to spend some time customizing it a bit. Since it slid, it was no longer in cherry condition, so I figured what the hell and went for it. Here's are stock photos.

And here's what it looks like after I chopped off the rear fender and moved the license plate:

I still have a little bit of cleanup to do (wire management) then I am going to screw a piece of black plastic underneath to seal it all off.

I also want to put a small windscreen on the front because I think it looks badass. I'm also going to do something with the exhaust, but I'm not sure what yet. I don't want it too loud, but a nice throaty rumble would be good.

And for those who are wondering: yes, that is a cable gun lock on my right shock. I use it to lock my helmet to the bike, since it doesn't come standard with a helmet lock. I need to get a black one. I also have a Gremlin Bell hanging from my carb. You can barely see it in the last picture. There's one on the other side as well. Gotta keep them gremlins away!

The bike does look a lot better soft tail than it did with that bulky fender and light array.

I don't see any damage from your accident anywhere either.

I replaced or repaired all the damaged parts except for the right side mirror, but you can't see it in the photo, and the right side pipe has scratches and a big dent that are kinda visible in the last picture.

There's tons more, but these are some of the major projects. I did everything myself except the body and paint work.

Corvette is coming along. A bit slow right now, as I have already replaced all of the under $350 parts, so now it's just big expensive stuff left. Buying a house come first.

Dash: Nice! You got that thing looking *clean* especially the interior. I like the upholstery work. How long did the project take?
2010-07-22, 2:23 PM #7
Dash that looks awesome, I like the upholstery, too. You did that yourself?
2010-07-22, 2:40 PM #8
I bought the car in 2006 and just got it painted late last year. I didn't reupholster the seats, I threw out my old seats and bought those ones as-is off craigslist for $360 out of some dudes wrecked 4th gen Camaro.
2010-07-22, 3:43 PM #9
Ahhhhhh. I need new upholstery in my boat but the shops want ~3-4k for it. Not worth it on a $6k boat :(

This is the blog I started to document my process of restoring the Corvette. Like I said earlier, I finished all the inexpensive stuff. My wife lost her job in May, so we've had less disposable income to work on project cars. She started a new job on Monday, though, so I'll be back in action really soon.

I don't know much about cars but I did make a nifty little sign for 2 thug-lookin' guys that I caught eyein' my stereo.

P.S. If you can't make it out it's basically a guy running away w/ money bags & it says "I'm watching you".

theres something genuinely erotic about working on banged up cars with your own god given hands and building it back into something beautiful.

Not that i would do it myself, i'll just stand there with a cuppa T and watch you hard at work and pretend i understand automotive mechanical engineering. :awesome:

Dash, sharp lookin' 3rd Gen. Curious as to why you did it to an RS? Regardless, my dream car (build) is a 1989 IROC-Z with an LS7. Mmmmm.

I've looked into those. The Triumph forum guys have a split opinion - some love them, some hate them. ZARD also makes an exhaust system, as does Triumph themselves.

Personally, having heard them up close, I think they sound like ****.

No real reason in particular, I shopped for 6 months and test drove many RS and Z28. I wanted a 91-92 because those were better built cars, so that throws out any IROC. Generally people ask way too much for their POS Z28, they are harder to find, and insurance companies rape you for being "high performance" (lol). Mechanically there is little difference between the RS and Z28, and I found a fully loaded (factory V8) T-top RS with a 5.7l swap already completed for $1500. I would have paid $3500 for the same car if it were a Z28 and get little or no performance increase. Plus something about having an RS which is supposed to be the lower model and being way more badass than every Z28 at the show.

This was my first third gen, but I've owned 3, once of which was a 91 Z28 with a factory 5.7l. It couldn't keep up with my RS as configured.

Do your valve clearance.

Look on the end of the tappets for any kind of damage.

Tension your cam chain.

If its still ticking, get it raging hot and drain your oil through a screen to check for metal shavings.

I'm not going to be able to do it until November (I'm in Boston on a co-op) but I'm going to do a rear disk brake conversion on my 2002 Saturn SL2. Not for braking performance, which would be negligible on this car anyways, but because drum brakes are a mechanical abomination and I hate working on them. I got two calipers off a car in a junkyard for $15 each. I'll have to rebuild them but they're in rather nice shape, all things considered. Some surface rust, seals look okay at a glance. If nothing else, the core charge for new calipers at Advance is $25 so I can save $20 on the conversion even if I buy new ones. :P

I also picked up two motorized rear view mirrors for $25 each off a 2001 model. I installed them today and was joyed to find that they both work perfectly. Previously, the passenger side mirror was motorized but broken (probably stripped by someone who adjusted it by hand) and the driver's side was replaced with a cheap manual that vibrated at high speed, making it hard to see.

You don't need motorized mirrors if you're the only one allowed to drive your car!

Stuck caliper or seized wheel bearing...?

I was reversing out of my (gravel) driveway. suddenly i stop, halfway into the street. pull back in to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. still locked up. pull back to head of driveway dragging a line in the gravel and get a ride from fiancee to work. will get to work on it in an hour or so when i can get a ride to it and some help from my father.

Yeah. Apparently my rear breaks are disc breaks for actual breaking, and drum breaks for Parking/E-break. the drum breaks were engaged and got stuck on the right side. **** that ****. took that ****er to the shop. i still hate cars.

Oh man you have one of those stupid drum brakes in the hub. I don't know what the hell is so hard about making a caliper that actuates with a cable.

In ordering parts for the Corvette, I've learned something interesting:

Replacement parts for old vehicles are either very expensive, or very inexpensive. There's not much of a middle ground. New temperature sending unit? $6 (as opposed to $48 for Amy's Honda). New parking brake assembly? $86, lever and all. New steering box? $650! New windshield wiper actuator? $150! New horn relay? $65!

I think this dichotomy exists for two reasons:
1) Old parts are not technologically advanced and easy to manufacture
2) Old parts are not in high demand and not mass produced, so prices are higher to subsidize manufacturing expenses

Well, those engines aren't really 'high performance' by any standards now I guess, the only reason I asked is because while you may pay more for the Z/28 or IROC, you'll get more out of it, even with what you put in.

I however, disagree on the 91-92 models being better built. I also dislike the interior upgrade that chevy gave them.
