"What happens when you put a guy to hit with a hammer a homemade bullet?"

That's the worst sentence ever.

Well, the guy did hit a bullet with a hammer. Did you expect anything more?

Pfft, I have some somethings from about 1915.

If I owned some sort of WW1 German rifle I'd check if they were firable. :v:
nope.
2010-07-24, 2:48 PM #49
just hit them with a hammer.

If I kill myself do I count as a casualty of WW1?
nope.

it's quite possible the rounds will still work possibly with a few hangfires (click.......boom)

though unfired ammunition from 1915 starts to get into "collector ammunition"

Yeah wookie, that makes so much sense. The man's an idiot.

I never said he was smart and hitting the bullet with a hammer wasn't very bright. Kind of like Deadman said, he may be an idiot, for all I know he's a democrat that thinks firearms and bullets are inherently evil and need to be destroyed, but Echoman went way over the top.

This is why I think firearms safety should be a mandatory course in high school.
2010-07-26, 12:23 AM #55
It would certainly be more useful than most other high-school classes.

Now that I think about it more, it's really not far-fetched that someone could think the gun is what does most of the work. Like the firing pin makes a spark or something. It's generally not dangerous to hit a mound of smokeless powder with a hammer.
2010-07-26, 4:31 AM #57
I would want to know that for a fact before swinging a hammer though.
But yeah, you make a very good point about firearm safety, it's something everyone should know.

It's a good idea to know fires are hot even if you never go camping.
2010-07-26, 5:09 AM #61
But I haven't managed to go 2 decades without seeing a fire!
nope.
2010-07-26, 5:18 AM #62
I've managed to go 20 years without my house burning down but they still taught me what to do, and it was still a good idea to teach me.

as long as the hammer isn't on fire and doesn't strike a surface that could cause a spark nothing will happen

even if you ignite a mound of smokeless powder what will happen is you'll get a big bright flame

black powder on the other hand... that's a different story... never hit black powder with a hammer

How many fire drills / alarms have you participated in during your lifetime?

How many of those were actual structure fires?
woot!

oh well I was more interested in you guys hearing the story, rather than seeing the picture. The jpg was an image of the safety memo that the US Military sent out, so it's not just a picture of someone's exploded hand. It tells the story of what happened, but it also includes a picture for shock value. So for those that don't want to see the disgusting pulp of the guy's hand, here's the story:

This is a direct quote from the training Weapons Safety memo that was distributed to military personnel.

"While mounting the M2 machine gun onto the turret system of his MATV during pre-combat checks, this soldier experienced difficulty inserting the locking pin on the MOD 93 machine gun mount. The soldier then attempted to force the locking pin into place with a rock. After this failed, he then secured a loose .50 cal. round, using it to hammer at the locking pin, attempting to force the locking pin into place. After several hits with the .50 cal. round, the primer activated, setting the round off in the soldier’s hand. Extensive injuries were suffered to his right hand, middle, ring and pinky finger."

Basically, a trained US Army soldier decided to use the primer end of a .50 cal round as a hammer. You guys are talking about this other guy (who has no firearm experience) being an idiot; well his level of stupidity does not even compare to the stupidity of this soldier who's had firearm safety drilled into his brain by the US Military (believe me, I know) and still managed to do something equally retarded.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Lassev: I guess there was something captivating in savagery, because I liked it.
2010-07-27, 7:36 AM #77
Yeah, OK, that military guy is a much bigger idiot.

I think it's a toss-up between "dumb guy from Kansas who should have known better" and "dumb guy from LA who had no idea". Not to mention that even if he HADN'T set the primer off in his hand, enjoy firing that cartridge with the bullet jammed too far back into the casing.
