Hot hardware did a review on HP's latest 30". Emon, get in here and profess your love for everything IPS. And mechanical switching while we're at it.

7ms seems a bit slow for a pricey display such as that... then again, I'm no expert...

But it's an IPS panel. They typically have higher refresh rates when compared to a TN panel.

Nice resolution though, lack of inputs kind of kills it for me

I would assume something like that is more designed for... well the design world. Not so much the mainstream consumer.

Response times are usually best case scenarios. If I recall correctly, response times for IPS monitors (something to do with how they change color?) are more consistent. A 7ms IPS should perform better than a 7ms TN film. Even the very best 2ms response time gaming monitors have SOME noticeable ghosting in certain situations. I play games on a Dell 2007FP with a 16ms response time. It bothered me for about the first thirty minutes, and now I don't notice it anymore. As long as it's under, say, 16 ms, your brain is pretty good at ignoring it.

Thanks for posting, Chewie. That's actually comparatively cheap, and I'd love to buy one. Unfortunately I can't justify the cost. It would be great for dual use as a monitor and TV... it would be pretty cool to have a monitor with better color reproduction than most movie theaters.

I love my TN. 24" widescreen $169. Take your IPS and cram it!

Funny you posted this. I'm actually considering getting one of these. I originally wanted a 3008WFP, but I think this one wins out due to the much lower cost.

Yea, I have a 24" TN panel too, but it's a little more than $169. I could just never justify the cost of IPS panels. I'd rather spend it on better computer internals.

If only it were 16:10, not glossy, and had inputs other than the one input type that only Apple uses basically then it might actually be pretty nice.

16:9? Mini Display Port? What a piece of ****.

What the ****'s wrong with 16:9

Nothing wrong with it, just personal preference. I prefer 16:10 because I don't tend to use my monitors to watch videos, and I like the little extra vertical real estate that 16:10 gives you.

I bought this a few months ago and love it. 1920x1200, 2 hdmi 1 vga. 1/8 sound input/output, perfect for running xbox/pc through 1 set of speakers

Response time specs for all monitors are pretty much bs.
2010-07-27, 8:43 PM #17
It really is. Most of the specs are meaningless, you really need to see it, properly calibrated, in the properly lit room. There are a few sites that do high quality reviews (including photograph of backlight evenness, color calibration results etc) but they're usually not up to date.

On a bit of a tangent, where can I physically find IPS monitors? I'd like to compare them to TN panels on my own, side by side, but it seems to be an impossibility.

At stores, look for displays that have a viewing angle of 178 degrees. This doesn't mean they are IPS, but it rules out TN completely. You may also find VA/PVA panels with these viewing angles, but those are becoming more rare. VA types are pretty good too, but not as good as IPS. They have a weird purpleish color in the black areas when you look at it from the side. IPS panels are even black.

I bit the bullet on this guy today actually. Got it for about $1200, where ordering from HP directly would've cost me around $1450 after tax and shipping.

Thanks dude, finally got a chance to compare.

And?

To be honest, it isn't worth the price difference to me; I'd still rather have a larger TN than the IPS for the money.
