Minecraft is a sandbox game in the most literal sense. You play in a randomly generating infinite world and explore, build, dig, explore, etc. the developer in charge is an amazing man who goes by "Notch" and has provided nearly dayly updates for the past few months. I post this in the hopes that I can bring the wonder that is Minecraft to more people, and also because the price will increase in a few weeks.
Minecraft MP, or atleast a very buggy test version, came out tonight. this is a huge step forward because Minecraft MP stable signals the beginning of the beta and a price increase, get it now while the getting is good!
Minepedia is a great resource for those who are just starting out.

I will update this tommorow with some pictures and resources, for now just get this game.

Minecraft was much more interesting before notch started trying to make it an adventure game.

Just tried the original inbrowser, it's pretty cool as a lego-style build game. Graphics are pretty old school, and I was disappointed in the physics (ie, when you remove a tree trunk, the tree above still floats there).

I'm considering buying it, ill have to find more videos of multiplayer and the latest alpha.

This sounds like a ripoff of Dwarf Fortress.

It's kinda fun to tunnel around the landscape like an ant. Other than that, not much to do, and I don't want to pay money just so I can have a few more things to waste my time with. I looked in the gallery and some people just don't have lives. I wanted to see cool structures, but it's mostly just really detailed sprite art of game/cartoon characters... :saddowns:

DF is old news. Goblin Camp is way better.

Minecraft is supposedly going to be able import DF levels at some point.
Also doom levels.

I wan't impressed myself really. I did the whole tunneling thing too. Made a couple of trenches and ran water through them. I was disappointed when I couldn't take back the water even though I cut off the source. Anyways... It wasn't anything major, untill I decided to go as deep as I could from a shaft that was already so deep I couldn't see the bottom. I took it down until I hit a gigantic cavern system (complete with fungi). It was massive. I got lost in it. Broke into some parts that were completely independent from everything else. Then finally when I got to the surface, I flooded it :)

It does look promising, but it's not remotely near completion.

With better graphics.

...But without the dwarves, the industry, the booze, the vast living world populated with nations and cultures, the history, the physics, the economy, the wars, the ancient forgotten beasts, the potential for amusing stories, the gameplay...

There are some promising graphic renditions being worked on. And there are already complete tilesets for it.

If you could like to a good tileset for DF I would actually be pretty happy, im alright with learning it on my own, ascii just hurts my head.
2010-08-04, 9:02 PM #21
It's not that simple. It already uses a 'tileset'; it's not a console window, it's opengl. The code is the problem. You can't just replace everything with sprites because then you couldn't read the text.

Yes, that's right. It uses the same tiles for dwarfs and text.

Goblin Camp is an open-source response to DF. A bunch of fans (myself included) were like, DF is so awesome, but so horrible. Make it opensource so we can make it playable. But the author is a paranoid little ***** so the goblin camp guys just ripped him off.

So is Dwarf Fortress!

I actually find Dwarf Fortress easier to comprehend without a graphical tileset. They just make it harder to process what is on the screen. The normal ASCII tileset is easier because everything is a simple symbol.

I think you've mixed up two stories, here. Goblin Camp is Dwarf Fortress-inspired but is in no way intended as a replacement for Dwarf Fortress. It has a two-dimensional world, for example. I think was intended to demonstrate some user interface ideas as well, though, since that's one area where DF is severely crippled.

Khazad is the open-sourced response to DF, created by a guy named Impaler. Originally, it was a visualiser for Dwarf Fortress (and a pretty good one, at that) and Impaler was a respected member of the DF community. And then he got a big ego or something and started being a complete douchebag to people on the forums, telling people to stop donating, and turned Khazad into an open-source DF-clone. (Originally, when I saw his douchebaggy posts, I thought it was tongue-in-cheek. Surely the creator of a fantastic visualiser for DF would not be an infantile troll!) He was banned from the DF forums for insulting DF fans, telling people to stop donating and stealing code for his project.

There's a minecraft level in development for TF2, it was featured on the TF2 blog. :)

I also saw some minecraft "hats" on fpsbanana that envelop the character heads and make them look minecraftish.
