“We had an outline and George changed everything in it," Kurtz said. “Instead of bittersweet and poignant he wanted a euphoric ending with everybody happy. The original idea was that they would recover [the kidnapped] Han Solo in the early part of the story and that he would then die in the middle part of the film in a raid on an Imperial base. George then decided he didn’t want any of the principals killed. By that time there were really big toy sales and that was a reason.”

The discussed ending of the film that Kurtz favored presented the rebel forces in tatters, Leia grappling with her new duties as queen and Luke walking off alone “like Clint Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns,” as Kurtz put it. Kurtz said that ending would have been a more emotionally nuanced finale to an epic adventure than the forest celebration of the Ewoks that essentially ended the trilogy with a teddy bear luau.

I would have liked that one better, but alas, Georgie had already boarded the money train.

It would have been ahead of its time but I think the cliched happy ending was the way to go. Funny that the alleged proposed ending would be cliche today.

I was in a hospital ER the other day and saw a Star Wars novel. I glanced at the back cover. Apparently Han and Leia are having to battle Jacen, Mara Jade is dead and Luke and Ben are sulking. Probably some other emo stuff I have forgotten already. Seems they have succeeded in turning the book franchise into crap.

I'd prefer if Han didn't die but that doesn't sound bad.
nope.

During NJO, Jacen turned into the likable kind of evil *******. It's not surprising that he's the new villian. It doesn't make any sense that Han would fight against him, though.

Besides, didn't Zahn basically tell George to go **** himself when he hinted that Palpatine formed the empire to counter the coming Vong invasion? I saw somewhere that in the Old Republic novels they reveal that the Sith have been planning it for millenia, ever since Revan (Who was also the likable sort of evil *******) discovered the Vong.

JM, if that is true then that is awesome. It's exactly the kind of moral complexity that I enjoy.

They succeeded a long time ago.

Basically, right now the books are: Luke is trying to figure out why Jacen went evil. Oh, and other Jedi are going crazy, oh, and here, have some Sith.

Its ****ing awesome.

In other news, I found something awesome today for $10. Only A New Hope was opened, and it included that Making of tape.

Ah, okay. One of my sets is the 95 restored letterbox set. Supposedly the last time they would ever be released in their "original" form.
