Seriously. A 'power' laptop is plain stupid. Buy a laptop for mobility. Buy a desktop for power.

Trust me, I know. I told her that a million times but she "knows what she wants." Not my money.

Not necessarily. What if you frequently move but stay in locations long enough to get work done or play games? I've considered getting a laptop powerful enough with a big enough screen to do development work because I could take it to a library and get away from other distractions.

A roommate of mine, freshman year, got a gaming laptop because he frequently moved between his divorced parents' homes.

It's perfect for when you need to be in more than one place but still want to actually do something interesting.

I have a gaming laptop, and it's served me well for both playing games in various locations, and for using Photoshop, inDesign, CAD, various 3D modeling and rendering programs, etc., between studio and home.

I'm pretty sure that was a joke.

I know - as soon as I saw the thread title I was going to write that - I just hit reply without looking.

I thought it was funnier to leave it in.

Also, what's wrong with a powerful laptop? Some people don't like having a big desktop but still do some gaming, it's nice to have a little computer you can keep wherever you want or take with you.

Nothing's "wrong" with it..but you do realize that you pay a LOT more for a laptop when compared to an equivalent desktop, right?
woot!

Of course, but if you have the money and know what you want, go for it.

This is very much true for me too. Ok, so I've got a MacBook Pro so it's not good for current games, but I'm working through HL2, System Shock 2 and a few golden oldies off GOG.com but I also use it for work involving 3D structural steel design. It's my only computer (XBbox 360 notwithstanding) but I don't need anything else.

I'd not recommend it for gaming specifically, but it's a bloody brilliant all rounder.

I couldnt ever see myself getting a gaming laptop- It's simply too many compromises to my gaming experience.

-I would have to bring along a usb keyboard + mouse just so I wouldnt be handicapped by cramped keyboard/trackpad.
-I dislike gaming over WiFi.
-Paying more but getting less performance. (Compared to desktop counterparts).
-Yeah its portable but battery life is going to suck. It's likely you will be tied to a wall outlet anyway.

I have a decent gaming laptop ( Asus G60, core i5 2.27GHz, 4gigs of RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTS 360M). I got it in case my rig goes down (which it is, currently) and so I don't have to haul it around since it is a steel full tower. Anyway, my laptop is not an all out beast, but it does well with what I play mostly. (WoW, Borderlands, Mass Effect, etc.) Only cost me about $1500 including warranties. From Best Buy. My only reason is so I could get the no interest payments for 18 months, then pay off the full amount with my next Tax Return. ( for those of you who think this is a very unreliable way of doing things, take into account I'm married and have two kids. That's almost an instant 3k for me.)
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

I want an instant 3k, anyone willing to marry me and have some kids? I'll split it 50/50.
2010-08-15, 1:51 PM #21
tax RETURN.

and no, nobody wants to marry you.
2010-08-15, 3:09 PM #22
An argument can be made that if you are getting 3k back from the IRS, you should be paying them less to begin with and invest it.

But, hey, this way, you can claim to support your government by giving them a loan every year!

i misread and thought you meant you had 1200 to spend on games for your new laptop..i was going to consider buying them all
2010-08-16, 8:28 AM #26
I bought a 'power' laptop something around a year and a half ago. It still plays everything I throw at it (9800M card), but was a bit steep (~$1400). I bought it because at the time, I was doing a LOT of moving around. I still use it as a primary machine today because my desktop is slightly less useful. I plan to build a new desktop soon though.

If you're going to move around a lot, but still want to play games, it's not a complete waste, but still... you get less for the $$$

Well you get fewer MHz, but more mobility. Think of it as buying roller skates!
2010-08-16, 10:06 AM #28
You have to ask yourself what games are you going to be playing? I realistically guess that it will be to outdated in 3 years or less, and you won't be playing new games on it.

I'm not a gaming laptop kinda guy, but I have lots of friends who swear by their Asus gaming laptops. They seem to give a pretty decent bang for your buck if that's what you're looking for.

Mine is actually an Asus X series (older series I think) and I love it. Zero issues, even came with a nifty overclock application. Seems to help a bit when trying to run Crysis, but other than that, not a big improvement. Solid machine though.
