Can anyone here do a relatively simple CAD drawing?
2010-08-19, 5:08 PM #1
I have a paper drawing of a part with measurements/specifications, etc. I need to get a few manufactured on a site called mfgquote.com, and all the suppliers prefer a CAD drawing. I have one from a really long time ago but I'm having trouble finding it. Is anyone here familiar with CAD? Can you convert a paper drawing into a model and then send me the file? Not sure I will need this, will know for sure on Saturday afternoon. The last guy that did it for me took ~15 minutes (it's basically an angle bracket with a 45 degree angle).

I have AutoCAD.

Couldn't you just scan the drawing and post on forums?

Thanks for your help guys, it looks like indeed I don't have the original CAD files so I'll work on getting it scanned in and try to post it this weekend. Thanks!

If it's as simple as you say I can do it for you when you post the scan. :)

Actually I'm going to search my old computer/drive for the cad file on Saturday before I bother posting it. Does anyone know if there's a standard CAD file extension?

dwf, dwg are among the most common (AutoCAD), but there are about 100 others that are program specific.

Sounds familiar, thanks.

DXF is pretty universal too. Manufacturing sometimes want that format in addition to the drawing for CNC things like water jets, and I needed it to cut a circuit board in school.

If everything else falls through, I can help you out as well.

Gerber?

Nah, it was a DXF I did in Autocad. I'm a mechanical engineer, so I didn't do it the right way with a Gerber file.
The RF lab had a machine that took the copper plated board, and cut away all the unnecessary copper. It apparently took the DXF style that I was used to from CNC applications.
Funny with all the EE instructors I had to go through to get it done that no one steered me toward making a Gerber and sending it out.

Gerber is pretty standard for PCBs in any case.

Im amazed, that the high school i went to, not only had a bunch of autoCAD classes, but also the machine that you can put what you make into it and it would make what you did on the cad program. It was pretty intense...

I havnt used CAD in forever though, do they have a torrent on the internet so i can download the $100+ software?

Speaking of weird food, my wife brought home something that turns out to be a Longan. Anyone ever had one? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longan

I had those things. They are good if you can find a fresh selection. Otherwise, they start to taste "meh."
