I realized I'm probably not taking advantage of some awesome extensions, so I was curious if you all had any suggestions.

Right now I'm using:

One Number (ZZTs all in one google services plugin)

Wolfram Alpha (For maths / science / dumb questions)

Evernote... which I have yet to actually use.

Adblock

AutoHD for youtube

and some facebook enhancer... though I'm not sure exactly what it does. :ninja:

any recommendations? anything good out there for reddit?

the two I use most which were recommended here are

IE Tab - Version: 1.4.30.4
Display web pages using IE in a tab - useful for checking cross comparability for websites or browsing a page that does not load properly in chrome.

Send from Gmail (by Google) - Version: 1.11
auto opens any email links to your gmail account by default.

Okay?

1. Chrome's buggier.
2. Leaks RAM worse than Firefox. (1GB for a single tab, seriously)
3. Flash playback is buggy.
4. Tab bar is atrociously bad.
5. Extensions are limited in power. (See also: Adblock)

A meaningless anecdote without any context. Were there plugins involved? Like Flash? Some crazy JavaScript? And Chrome's multiprocess model at least makes it possible to recover from individual wayward tabs... Firefox has to be restarted completely. You opening task manager to see Chrome.exe taking 1 GB this one time you were doing this one thing doesn't really mean anything.

Playback of what?

What is bad about it? Last time I had this conversation with you it boiled down to you admitting "I don't like it" for the reason of "just because."

A valid point but it does come with the benefit of added security.

Also I think mb is using Chrome specifically because he doesn't want to use Firefox anymore.

Tabs or even the whole app (thought that wasn't supposed to happen?) crash.

Not meaningless.

I've had it happen:

1. Without any flash or other plugins on a site.
2. On /massassi/. Yeah. We're not talking insane sites here.
3. Sure, except by looking at task manager you have no idea which tab is responsible.
4. Firefox hasn't leaked crazy amounts of memory like that in ages, and it does lower RAM usage when you kill the right tab anyway.

Oh it's whacky.

A. I've had it screw up Speedtest.net, where the ping would be 1000ms+. Only in Chrome. Yeah, figure that one out.
B. Video playback will randomly screw up, especially with GPU acceleration.
C. Not flash, but mentioning it anyway: the built-in video playback is a joke. I've had it completely crash the browser, fail to skip, not support full-screen, etc.

Uh, what? I'm pretty sure everyone is in agreement about how the tab bar sucks. When I have 15 tabs open, it suddenly becomes useless. You're either forced to use extra windows or some stupid extension for vertical tabbing, instead of doing any of the available options for Firefox (including extensions giving extra tab bars, my personal favorite).

Because security has been a major factor in Firefox extensions...

Not everyone is in agreement because not many people open more than 15 tabs at once.

You're right, it does happen. Not nearly as much as Firefox, and almost all of the time it gracefully handles individual tabs instead of bringing down the whole app.

How is it Chrome's fault that Adobe can't write a plugin correctly? If you're going to call it a fault of daily use of Chrome, then fine, but it's not a problem with Chrome itself. Silverlight works wonderfully in Chrome, for example.

It's not officially supported yet.

Meanwhile Firefox just doesn't crash at all :P

How is it Adobe's fault when it only happens in Chrome's built-in version? Seriously, up until they added that build-in version, it worked fine. And it works fine in every other browser. Yeah.

Then they shouldn't put it in public builds.

Well that's just a giant, giant lie.

But anyway, do we need to have every browser thread turn into browser wars?

Adobe wrote it and Google distributes it. Still Adobe's fault.

Not everything is always perfect. Look at Firefox's track record of public releases. It's not exactly pretty. Chrome's not perfect but neither is Firefox. It still has plenty of problems.

I disagree on the Adobe front but I'm too lazy to look it up, cause I thought I read something about Chrome interfering with it. So I'll let it go.

And I don't mind so much perfection, but if they're not supporting it, it shouldn't be there.
2010-08-22, 10:08 PM #15
I thought it was only in the development build (which is all I use) but it's public now. What sites give you problems? I have trouble with YouTube but YouTube's players have always sucked, Flash or otherwise in any browser. In fact, every Flash video player I've ever used has had problems. Silverlight players have provided the best video experience I've ever seen in a browser. For some reason Flash players always suck. Hmm... seeing a trend here...

My biggest complaint with Chrome is that any extension for mouse and rocker gestures does not work as well as what I use in Firefox.

Thanks, not sure why I havent installed this yet. Booting up IE to test a site always makes me cringe.

I'll give the reddit enhancement one a shot, I've been using reddit a lot more recently.

I like Speed Dial (a la Opera, same extension also available for FF) because I like setting speed dials as opposed to having Chrome automatically generate my most visited (because then they jump around and keep changing and it's annoying and then disappear if I ever clear private data)

tbh most of my Chrome/Iron extensions were originally on Firefox.

Other ones that I use/like:
  • FastestChrome
  • Rikaikun (on-the-fly inline Japanese dictionary... FF equivalent is rikaichan)
  • Quick search
  • SearchPreview for Google

Funny thing about rikaichan... it's made by the same guy who did the Tomato firmware for Linksys routers. Talk about polar opposite applications.
