Where's nice in Canada

Maybe I should move there.

I hear Vancouver is nice, any Canaliens have any suggestions? Somewhere good to bring up a family.

Just spent a month in Winnipeg, Manitoba - got robbed and threatened on different occasions, and I didn't really find the personality in that city... felt kinda empty. Wouldn't recommend Winnipeg itself, but if you appreciate beautiful, vast nature, you'll definitely find a spot for you and your family in its surroundings.

I want to move there myself one day. I couldn't say for actual living, but I spent two weeks around Toronto and Montreal in June and loved every second of it.

I haven't been to Vancouver yet but pictures I've seen look pretty spectacular.

(In all seriousness, Toronto and Victoria are two great, active cities. I was particularly fond of Markham, near Toronto.

You could always come to quebec and learn our bastardized french! :D)

I'd like to move to Quebec, but my French is poor. Izzy's is excellent, but it's High French. We've both mentioned moving before, and I'm starting to feel this may be a good time to investigate it properly.

Wherever we go, I need to find work and we'd need to get cars and a house and all that too, so it's just speculative right now.

Well the great thing about urban centers like Toronto, Victoria, Calgary, Montreal and Quebec City is that you could get by without a car, at least for your first few months if not years. Metros, buses and taxis are pretty effective, though the latter is by far the most costly.

As for speaking french, well, Montreal is particularly good for english people. Still, its always possible to learn the tongue and usually, depending on your qualifications, employers will welcome you with open arms.

The one thing I would suggest checking out is if your scholar degrees are applicable and recognized in Canada.

They should be - my University is older than your country! (I need to move quickly on my professional qualifications though)

Windsor, Ontario is pretty good. Toronto is nice too, but I am more of a fan of Windsor.

Well I hope that is the case. I've heard horror stories about what's officially accepted here in Canada, but hey, it could be fiction for all I know. I obviously never had to deal with that. :P Your degrees are pretty high up there.

Ah yes, Canada. It's the third on my "other countries to move in" list after Denmark and Sweden, its main difference to the other two is that I'd actually need a reason to move there. Hum.

Turns out both the UK and Canada are signatories of the Washington Accord which guarantees that both my Master's (which was accredited) and, when I get it finished, professional qualification are recognised as equivalent. Obviously I'd have to get up to speed with local codes, but it's all sorted from an equivalency point of view.

Alberta's pretty bad unless you can get in the petrochemical industry. Saskatchewan and Manitoba are virtual wastelands.

Ontario's probably your best bet.

But the job situation's pretty bad everywhere on Earth. I can't recommend moving anywhere right now.

Yowzas! I'm glad I was only in Winnipeg for the airport! And I'm a Baltimore kid! @_@

I'm not sure if I'd describe what I saw of Manitoba a wasteland. Super-rural, sure, but they seem to be doing fine enough on the farming. /shrug/

Jon - by the time we've thought about it, decided on it, organised it, got the paperwork done I suspect the times will be at least a little different. Maybe even a bit better.

Thanks for all your input so far everyone.

I've been to Toronto a few times. Once there was a free Nickelback concert going on, I didn't go.

I like living in Toronto.

When people first move here, they always underestimate the extreme weather. This summer has been ridiculously hot and humid (30 degrees, 98% humidity = feels like 40, unbelievably stickey) and the winter will go right down to -20-30ish.

But yeah, I grew up here. Really safe, good schools, tons of activities/stuff to do. Bars/restaurants/entertainment is pretty much top notch, both mainstream and independent music scenes have heavy presence. Great sports town (NHL, MLB, NBA, MLS, CFL, Rogers Cup, Honda Indy, etc)

Pretty much everything except the weather, taxes, and anything that has to do with city council/politics are sweet. And the telecom companies will ravage you if you let them.

I live about 60 km away from Vancouver. It's a really good city, amazing views, lots to do in and around the city but it's stupidly expensive to live in Vancouver itself. You'd find cheaper real estate in a near by city like Langley, Abbotsford, or maybe Surrey. And like someone was saying before with job situation, it's not much different in this area, things are tough, not easy to find work at the moment.
