Here are some tips for first time players
1. Keep track of Bye weeks. You don't want all your players to have the same week off and then suddenly you have to start dropping big name players just to pick up available players who happen to be playing that week
2. Keep track of the end of the season. Good players from the best teams most likely won't be playing at the end of the season, which is usually when fantasy football playoffs start or have started. Don't be surprised to have your top players not even playing those games
3. Quarterbacks are a dime a dozen this year. If you don't have a shot at Manning, Brees, or Rodgers, don't waste your early picks on QBs. Stock up on running backs (especially if you get points for carries / 10yds = 1pt) and wide receivers. If you aren't getting a top 3 QB, the rest are all pretty close to each other, not a whole lot of variation, and not worth wasting an early pick. You are going to win games through your RBs and your WRs, often not even your primary ones. With your top QB, top RB, and top WR, you are somewhat expecting them to do well all the time. But it's the 2nd RB, the 2nd and 3rd WR, and usually a WR/RB slot choice that will be winning you games, those are the guys that will put you over the edge, not give you the instant win.
4. When looking for players, I'd say you are much safer more often than not drafting based on player potential, not team potential. A lot of people draft players cuz they are on a "good team", but that really doesn't matter much for fantasy. I remember when Dallas used to suck ass they still were a top 3 fantasy defense cuz of all the turnovers they created, TD returns, etc, so they were an awesome pick. So if you are coming down to two players, check last years performance, see how many pts they put up, and go with them.
5. Yes, get Chris Johnson
If you need some help during your draft or whatever, do not fret to ask! I love fantasy football! In 3 or 4 leagues this year myself
