So, it's gonna be AMD vs. nVidia now?

AMD seems to have gotten more than it could handle...

Oh well.

Huh? You do realize they're only killing the brand name, ATI, right? They're not killing off the product line. Nothing but a name change.

tbh, expected as much.

nothing will change other than the name.

I was referring to the years of financial disappointment through the brand. They weren't prepared for the graphics market. Wonder if they'll ever pull out of it...

What, read the actual article? This is AoEJedi we're talking about here.

Jeez, even I read the article.

What are you talking about.
2010-08-30, 12:40 PM #11
My guess is as good as any, but I think this is what he's talking about:

Quote:
It's been a long four years, but AMD has finally hits its stride after its acquisition of ATI Technologies way back in 2006. After agreeing to purchase ATI for $5.4B, AMD was besieged with quarterly losses stemming from the purchase, constant pressure from NVIDIA in the graphics market, and beatdowns from Intel (who wasn't exactly playing by the rules of fair business) in the processor market.

Well, it seems that what people are focusing on is this:

If you've got a better method for computing I'd like to hear it!

"The first graphics cards to, erm, benefit from the new nomenclature will ship "later this year," and the whole thing is said to have been motivated by AMD's move to Fusion APUs -- hybrid CPU and GPU chips -- where it's considered beneficial to have a unified branding strategy."

There is a thorough beat down of intel linked from the AMD/ATI article. For the lazy - Intel purposefully crippled it's compiler for AMD chips (Not utilizing AMD chips special features is one thing; afterall, it's an intel compiler; but they apparently went a step further) and making ATI GPUs run slow somehow. How much of this is legitimate maliciousness, and how much is nothing more than not optimizing for competitor products, who knows; the authorities don't bother to understand (See Microsoft being charged with an anti-trust suit for reusing software within it's own products) so why should we?

You know, this kinda worries me. I'm about to buy a new intel mobo and i-core cpu with an ATI card. Am I really going to be encountering such problems?

That makes no sense at all from a business perspective. Essentially that would make benchmarks show that AMD CPUs had better gaming performance, I can't see why they'd ever want that to happen.

Do you have a source for that?

p.s. 3dfx for ever!

In the mid-late 90s, PowerVR sold a line of add-in cards, similar to the old Voodoo cards.

Wait, so that means those hundreds of sticks of SDRAM I have will be worth something someday? And the bag of pentium 4s?

I have a couple sticks of 512mb RDRAM I bet is worth something

Tibby: Probably not -- SDRAM was widely produced for a long period of time. Supply is still relatively high compared to demand.

However, the RDRAM might be for those few servers that implemented it in the short time RAMBUS was a player in the space.

I also have fancy server ram and ISA ethernet cards.
2010-09-01, 11:24 AM #35
I have one or two old P4 systems back at home, early gen machines. They have reasonable CPUs, enough to make usage of. I told my dad not to bother since buying the RDRAM would be more expensive than building a new computer.
