Garbageman salesman

So I'm just sitting here minding my own business in my half a cubical here (at work).. and the phone rings, it's our garbage truck man with a serious Brooklyn accent. He goes on to tell me that his brother "Tony" has these sony electronic goods for sale. I'm actually kinda interested in what he had to say but I'm a little skeptical. He reads off TVs and camera's and laptops. For instance he has a 40" Bravia, list $1500 for $400..

Does anyone know of any scams or anything that start off like this?

The main one is the old "I am selling stolen goods" scam, in which someone steals some stuff and then sells it to you cheap. Other than that I don't know.

As long as I'm not getting scammed/setup is the only thing I'm worried about ;)

It's either a scam, or stolen... there's such a thing as too good of a deal.

Wait... you know your garbage truck man?

Sure, buy it. Just make sure you test everything first.
2010-09-01, 8:57 AM #6
I think it's safe to assume that it's completely legitimate. I'd buy cheap electrical goods from him if I were you. Nothing can go wrong!
2010-09-01, 9:07 AM #7
Well, if you receive stolen goods, they can be taken at the very least. Also, it is illegal. Also, dealing with criminals can lead to other problems.

Well no I don't know the guy, he could not even be the trash man but he said he was calling people on his route.. Though next trash pickup day I will be outside. The weird thing is, he called my line directly which I don't really give out so I'm not sure how he got it.

So how do I have them prove they are not stolen to avoid receiving stolen property?

How the hell does your garbage truck man get your WORK number? I mean, he knows your address so he might be able to get the house phone number, but to get your work phone?
2010-09-01, 9:50 AM #10
Oh ok. No I'm here at work, he called my work number. I'm assuming he meant to just get a hold at anyone at the office but I guess I was the lucky one.

I would have them prove it by not engaging them further on the topic in any way shape or form.

Just meet them somewhere and ask a cop to park nearby... if they get nervous then it's probably not legit. Slip the cop a $20 for 5 minutes of his time, and potentially saving your life from loads of problems.

Because that's not part of his job, and he won't do it without a personal gain. Have you not dealt with cops? Most of them are *******s, especially when being asked to do things.

^^^Silly boy.

Cops rock.

Best way to protect yourself is to have nothing more to do with these guys who are almost certainly flogging stolen goods.

Double EDIT:

If you buy stuff, then get caught, then the cops say "did you suspect you were buying stolen goods" and you say "no I usually buy my electronics from the man who takes my household refuse" then you get your wrists slapped HARD and rightly so.

If he's a garbage man, he clearly has a source for many household items such as electronics, vhs tapes, and babies. You should ask to see his entire inventory.

I would only buy from a garbage man if it was actually garbage.
Apple II? Sure. Brand new LCD? Stolen.

Purchasing/possession of stolen goods is a crime even if you don't know that they are stolen. Maybe. I think I saw that on COPS.

Yes it's called receiving stolen property.

Even though if Buy Backs buys a stolen Xbox 360 and turns around sells it they don't get in trouble.. figure that one out.

Let me get this straight...

Somebody you don't even know, called you up at a number that you don't know how they got, and asked if you want to buy unreasonably discounted electronic goods? And you need US to tell you that it's a terrible horrible idea to even think about continuing communications with this guy?? Is this a joke?
2010-09-01, 2:19 PM #25
No. and I didn't ask 'massassi' if it's a good idea or not. Simply telling you my exciting day geez...

u kinda did

Besides I did find out how they got the number and the whole thing is a mistake. Once upon a time my company acquired a company out of jersey, apparently we still have their phone number, and it forwards to our office. He was obviously somewhere in NYC, he told me he "Works for JCPenny distributing" (Remember boys, I said it was the trashmans brother with the items....) which I highly doubt but whatever. When I told the guy I was in ohio he abruptly got off the phone.

I said scam. I know it's not the best idea. To be honest I really don't care if the items fell off the back of a truck. I know that's hard for you goodie two shoes to swallow.

As long as the TV works and is legitimate (as in, the TV is actually a Bravia whatever), I'd say go for it. Who cares if it's stolen, and if it's illegal to buy stolen goods? You'll probably never get caught anyway. One man's loss is another man's gain.

What's the warranty on stolen goods? =p

Actually he did say the factory warranty's were good. But they wouldn't even sell me anything unless I had like 7 orders of items.

Factory warranty's only good with proof of purchase, no?

Yeah I'm not sure how that works. Maybe mb should go check them out.
