After nearly 13 years of development time, Duke Nukem Forever is nearing completion.

The game was on display at the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend in Seattle. Texas-based Gearbox Software confirmed they are finishing development of the title. Studio president Randy Pitchford told the Wall Street Journal the game is expected to ship this fall.

The question is... Does anybody really care anymore?

Is it bad that I actually do?. Duke Nukem was one the first FPS (aside from Wolfenstein and Doom of course) I ever played and introduced me into the genre. DN along with JK were the two top FPS's of my childhood. And for that reason, I am excited.

I'll believe it when I see it!

It would be pretty cool. Not to mention even TODOA came out after all!

Apparently the WSJ reported it incorrectly, the date is actually next year sometime and not this fall.

Gearbox has made good games of the genre before, so I'm confident it can be somewhat decent, though the quick timeframe for its release is a bit disconcerting.

EDIT: If it's not this fall, then I retract my worry.

I called this about two months ago. After hearing about Gearbox working on a top secret project, and then learning about a meeting between them and some guys who originally worked on it.

*shrugs* who knows.

Don't we have a guy working for Gearbox on Massassi who keeps saying that he's not allowed to talk about his current project? COME OUT, WHEREVER YOUR ARE. :P

I was pretty sure they did, officially. Perhaps it was a mixture of rumors and logic

They did, but apparently these Gearbox people are finishing it off after the old team got laid off.

From interviews I've read, the game was apparently close to being finished multiple times and every single time Broussard declared it not good enough and told the team to start over.

Now I don't know how reliable those interviews are (most were done with disgruntled ex-employees), but each iteration was apparently ahead of its time.

From what I've read/gathered from interviews and such, the core team that was working on DNF at 3DR is now working on it with a team at Gearbox, including some of the veteran Duke developers like Scott Miller, etc. Apparently even a few of the guys that work at Gearbox already were former 3DR employees, and the acquisition of the game was actually in 2009 BEFORE all of this stuff happened, so they've apparently been working on it for a while under wraps.

I really hope it's going to be a fun game rather than one of the dark, tuff' and edgy 2000s shooters with brown lighting and ridiculously bright bloom effects (that don't really fit the dark part but still).

If it comes out, of course... hmm. I think I've placed too much thought on this. I should divert all my "it's not even out yet but it's gonna suck" energy on Deus Ex 3. :suicide:

Also at this time one shouldn't forget the Duke Nukem 3D High Resolution Pack!

It's got faux-HDR! And normal mapping! Mixed with 1995-6 architecture! Woo!

I've been looking forward to this game since I was 10 years old. That's 13 years. I'm not quite like this guy, though:

In the 2K Games live stream from PAX they interviewed some guy who said he'd preordered it from Babbages, who went out of business. The 2K rep asked where he'd preorder from this time and he said something like "Bittor--I mean Gamestop"

According to the interview above, the game was well on its way to being complete around this time, but other games started popping up that had features DNF didn't and Broussard decided to can it and start over. The same thing happened around 2001 iirc.

Seriously though, I doubt it will ever happen.
